Chapter 156: Comply with the Judgment
by tinytree“I’m over forty and deal with corpses every day. There’s nothing I haven’t seen,” Miao Jiancheng said, trembling. “But when I saw that female corpse, I was so scared I wet my pants!”
“Then the hallway lights suddenly went out. I was already too scared to move… then I heard footsteps. Tap, tap, tap… very light, coming closer and closer. I don’t remember how long it lasted, maybe ten seconds, maybe twenty. Then the lights came back on. The female corpse was lying right in front of me, staring at me. I swear, she smiled at me. I saw her smile.”
Miao Jiancheng, pale and shaking, continued, “I couldn’t take it. I turned and ran.”
“That’s enough.”
Xiao Yu reached out and patted Miao Jiancheng’s shoulder. He turned to the pale-faced Guo Qiang and took the photo from him.
The photo was of the female corpse, the deceased Jia Yanli.
“Is this her?” Xiao Yu asked, holding up the photo for Miao Jiancheng.
“Ah?!” Miao Jiancheng stared at the photo, then shook his head after a moment. “It looks similar, but it’s not her.”
Hearing this, Xiao Yu and Guo Qiang finally breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t a ghost.
Thinking about it, Xiao Yu found it amusing. How could there be ghosts in this world?
There wasn’t much more to ask Miao Jiancheng. Xiao Yu spent another ten minutes using his Expert Psychologist ability to calm him down. Once he was sure Miao Jiancheng was mentally stable, the two left the hospital.
“Boss, still the same question,” Guo Qiang said, standing outside the hospital with a cigarette in his mouth. He handed one to Xiao Yu.
“What’s the purpose?”
People need a motive to build their intentions, and crime is no exception. If, as Xiao Yu initially suggested, the body was stolen to scare or intimidate someone, things didn’t add up now. The thief went through so much trouble, it couldn’t be just about simple intimidation.
From Miao Jiancheng’s experience, it was clear they were creating a ghostly panic.
“I don’t know, I’m not a fortune teller,” Xiao Yu said, taking a puff of his cigarette and shaking his head. “But one thing’s certain, the body can’t be stored for long. If they plan to use it for something, they’ll do it soon.”
The two returned to the Criminal Investigation Team, mobilized the police force, and checked all the surveillance cameras outside the morgue. They found nothing.
No suspicious people or vehicles that could have taken the body.
Xiao Yu expected this. If the thief was prepared enough to steal a body, they would have a meticulous plan. Someone who knew to wear gloves and bring a heat sealer was detail-oriented. It was not hard to guess they planned the entire theft carefully.
Could it really be as he suspected?
Sitting at his desk, Xiao Yu squinted and murmured to himself, “This method, this attention to detail, it’s not something a regular thief could pull off. A grave robber?”
No matter what, the body must be recovered.
At eight o’clock that night, Xiao Yu left the Criminal Investigation Team.
Outside the gate, the elegant and cool Mu Qingwu stood beside her sports car. Her fragrance filled the air, her delicate eyebrows curved like feathers, and her bright eyes sparkled.
Xiao Yu paused for a moment, then quickly walked over and hugged his sister.
“I never get tired of looking at you,” he said admiringly.
“Haha!” Mu Qingwu’s cool demeanor vanished, and she laughed, pinching her brother’s cheek, “You always know what to say.”
Xiao Yu chuckled, let go of his sister, and the two got into the car. Cases needed solving, but people also needed rest.
After having a quick meal at home, Xiao Yu sat on the couch, lost in thought. His mind was filled with details and processes of the case. He didn’t notice Mu Qingwu’s face showing a hint of unspoken shyness as she quietly left the room.
He didn’t realize how much time had passed when he sensed someone approaching. Snapping back to reality, he turned his head and was stunned.
A beautiful woman in a schoolgirl uniform stood not far away. Her white shoes, long straight legs, and perfectly proportioned figure could make any man’s eyes pop out. Especially her long, flowing hair adorned with a small hair clip, and her exquisitely beautiful face with rosy lips.
She looked like she could be the ruin of kingdoms. Even the pickiest man couldn’t find a flaw in her.
“Do… do I look good?” Mu Qingwu, as shy as a schoolgirl, glanced expectantly at her brother, her face blushing.
Seeing his brother with his mouth agape and looking completely dumbfounded, Mu Qingwu chuckled. Her lively, expressive eyes were like a clear pond after rain.
Facing such a stunning beauty, Xiao Yu was inevitably bewildered, staring at her in awe.
