    Chapter Index

Oh my god, I feel like I’m about to drop dead!

Xiao Yu felt like he was on the verge of collapse like he had just pulled an all-nighter and then been forced to run a kilometer. His heart was teetering on the edge of overload. He hobbled into the kitchen, holding his waist and wincing in pain.

His sister was hungry, and so was he.

They were supposed to head to their parents’ place this afternoon, where the mother-in-law would be.

    Breakfast was simple.

Two glasses of milk, two fried eggs each, and ham sandwiches. Done.

After breakfast was ready, Mu Qingwu came into the kitchen and hugged her brother from behind. She smiled sweetly without saying a word.

    “Time to eat!”

Xiao Yu gave her a quick peck on her stunningly beautiful face and led his koala-like sister to the dining room.

    “Is it good?”

Xiao Yu winked and grinned at his wife as he took a sip of milk.

    “Mm-hmm.”

Mu Qingwu responded with a gentle gaze.

After they finished breakfast, Xiao Yu carried his sister back to the bedroom, ready to catch up on some sleep.

When he opened his eyes again, it was already afternoon. Mu Qingwu had woken up before him. She was holding him close, looking at him with a tender expression. It almost felt like she was a young mom gazing lovingly at her precious child.

“Will you be my little puppy, just for me?” Mu Qingwu asked softly.

    Xiao Yu, “???”

‘Wait, what’s going on with my sister?’

    “Well?”

“Not a little puppy, right?” Xiao Yu tried to protest. “I’m a big bad wolf!”

“Hah.” Mu Qingwu pinched her brother’s handsome face, “Nope, you’re my little puppy.”

“I’m a wolf!” Xiao Yu bared his teeth.

“You really don’t want to be my puppy?” Mu Qingwu sounded a little disappointed.

“Okay, fine…” Xiao Yu sighed inwardly, “Woof woof!”

    “Naughty little brother!”

Touched, Mu Qingwu hugged Xiao Yu tightly as if she wanted to merge him into her own body.

    Xiao Yu smiled silently.

Girls can be so unpredictable sometimes. They’ll ask the most random questions. Make the most random requests. But if you indulge them… They get all emotional like they’d give you their whole world.

    ***

At four o’clock, the young couple returned to their parents’ house.

A little bulldog was prancing around Mu Qingwu, trying to get her attention in every way possible. Mu Qingwu, all smiles, picked up Kara and leaned against Xiao Yu. Meanwhile, Xiao Yu had one arm around his wife’s waist and was holding a small parrot in the other hand. The parrot was a gift for his mom, a little something from Mu Qingwu to win over her mother-in-law.

Not that she needed to try. Liu Yunqing already adored her like a daughter. As for her son, well… let’s just say he might as well have been adopted.

Luckily, Xiao Yu had his mother-in-law on his side, otherwise, he’d probably be crying in a corner somewhere.

The two families enjoyed their time together as usual, chatting and laughing until around seven in the evening when the couple finally headed home.

Sometimes, Xiao Yu felt guilty about not spending enough time with his family since becoming a cop. They hardly got to see each other anymore.

“Don’t worry about it. No one blames you for not being around as much,” Mu Qingwu said, holding onto his arm. “A man is like an eagle. Family, wives, even children—none of them should be chains holding an eagle back from flying in the sky.”

‘What does it mean to be a smart woman?’ Xiao Yu thought to himself: Mu Qingwu was the answer.

She never tried to tie you down.

Instead, she used all her warmth and kindness to weave a kite string around your waist.

No matter how far or high he flew, as long as that string remained unbroken, he’d always returned to her.

    ***

    Night, midnight.

Mu Qingwu opened her eyes and hugged Xiao Yu.

    Hmm?

    Xiao Yu opened his eyes.

“Happy Birthday,” Mu Qingwu whispered softly.

    Ha… Is that all?

Xiao Yu didn’t think much of it.

Nowadays, birthdays didn’t feel like a big deal.

“When we wake up, we can just have some cake,” Xiao Yu said, kissing his sister. “Now, go to sleep.”

“Brother…” Mu Qingwu’s face flushed with shyness as she gazed at Xiao Yu. “There’s something else.”

    “Huh?” Xiao Yu was puzzled.

Why did it feel like his sister was acting a little strange today?

Actually, even earlier, when they were with their parents and his mother-in-law, everyone was acting a bit off. They kept smiling at him in this weird way.

    What was going on?

“We…” Mu Qingwu’s blush deepened, and she whispered, “We’re having a baby!”

The air seemed to freeze at that moment. Xiao Yu’s body suddenly trembled. His hands shook. His whole body couldn’t stop trembling. He stared blankly at Mu Qingwu, dumbfounded. His mind had completely shut down.

Seeing her brother’s silly, dazed expression, Mu Qingwu couldn’t help but laugh. She also felt a little emotional.

Suddenly, Xiao Yu pulled his wife tightly into his arms.

He wanted to hold her as tightly as possible, but he was also afraid of hurting her. His voice trembled as he asked, “When… when did you find out?”

    “Before you came back.”

Mu Qingwu’s beautiful face had a special glow to it.

“That day, I wasn’t feeling well, so I went to the hospital. Then Dad, Mom, and my mom all came. Finally, we found out I’m pregnant.”

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you say anything?” Xiao Yu was so excited. “Now it all makes sense. Since I got back, I felt like everyone was acting strange. Mom kept giving me these weird looks, Dad too, and even your mom. You all kept this from me?!”

“Silly.” Mu Qingwu laughed softly. “Because it’s your birthday present!”

Xiao Yu’s heart couldn’t calm down.

    ‘It’s my birthday present?!’

“Brother.” Mu Qingwu gently cradled Xiao Yu’s head.

“What?” Xiao Yu buried his face in his sister’s chest.

“Mom and I went to make a wish again the day before yesterday,” Mu Qingwu said softly, stroking his short hair.

“What did you wish for?” Xiao Yu asked.

“That our baby will be born healthy and grow up strong.”

Mu Qingwu’s face had a gentle, warm glow, like sunlight.

“And…” Xiao Yu hugged her waist tightly. “You didn’t wish anything for me?”

“No wishes for the naughty brother.” She lowered her head and kissed his forehead. “Just for the baby and the baby’s father.”

Xiao Yu’s eyes welled up, and he buried his face even deeper in her embrace, his body trembling.

I’m going to have a baby. I’m going to be a dad!
