    Chapter Index

The phone rang, each pulse of waiting sounding unbearably loud.

On the surface, Wang Yun looked calm. In truth, he was tense himself.

After several rings, the call was suddenly answered, and a steady male voice came through.

Wang Yun recognized it at once. It was Samson. Just as he had thought. The number they had left him really was there, so he could contact them.

A quiet breath of relief loosened in his chest, but he kept up the act.

“Hey, bro, it’s me. I’m not making it home tonight.”

The moment Samson heard that, he knew something was wrong. There had to be someone besides Wang Yun, and the phone was probably borrowed.

    So he played along.

“Running wild again in the middle of the night, are you?”

Seeing Samson fall into the role so smoothly, Wang Yun knew the man understood his situation.

“Bro, Mom’s not in good health, so don’t tell her. I came with classmates.”

The instant Samson heard that, he understood. Wang Yun was using his mother as an excuse for the call. Don’t tell her meant hold your position and do not act. Came with classmates meant there were other people nearby.

So Samson answered in a deliberately harsh tone.

“Fine. But are you coming home tomorrow or not? Otherwise, I won’t be able to cover for you with Mom.”

Wang Yun thought for a moment. That was Samson asking whether action could be taken tomorrow.

“We’re having lunch tomorrow. If nothing comes up after that, I’ll head back in the afternoon. I’m with my friends, and a few new friends I just met, so don’t worry.”

With that, Wang Yun did not wait for Samson’s reply. He ended the call immediately. Then he handed the phone back to the attendant.

The attendant took it at once and carefully put it away.

“Oh, right, sir, would you like a late-night meal?”

Only after pocketing the phone did he remember that he had come with another purpose.

Wang Yun thought it over. He was a little hungry.

“Prepare a bit more food for me. I still have two friends who haven’t come back yet. We’ll eat together once they do.”

    “Certainly, sir.”

The attendant answered quickly and left.

Only after closing the door did the attendant finally let out a long breath. That had scared him half to death. He didn’t dare refuse a guest’s request.

    This job really was difficult.

Thinking that, he headed toward the kitchen to prepare Wang Yun’s late-night meal.

Meanwhile, Samson listened to the sharp beeping of the disconnected line. Only then did it occur to him that Wang Yun had hung up without so much as a word.

    How rude.

    Samson fumed inwardly.

Then he thought back to Wang Yun’s last sentence.

    A few new friends?

So the bosses behind Blood Banquet were not just one person after all.

    Lunch tomorrow?

The bosses of Blood Banquet were actually going to host Wang Yun together?

Samson found it hard to believe.

From the sound of it, they had invited him to lunch around noon, and things would likely wrap up tomorrow afternoon.

So Samson picked up the radio.

    “Rodney, report to me.”

    “Copy.”

Rodney’s excited voice came over the radio at once. He had thought the captain was finally about to move.

Rodney hurried to the command vehicle.

    “Captain, you called for me?”

    Samson shot him a look.

“Tonight’s operation is off. We’ll move it to tomorrow afternoon.” We’ve just received reliable information. There’s more than one boss behind Blood Banquet, and they’ll be hosting our informant for lunch tomorrow. So we wait until they’re all together. Then we move.”

Rodney felt a flicker of disappointment at not being able to bring them down tonight.

But the thought of arresting all the bosses behind Blood Banquet tomorrow filled him with renewed energy.

“Understood. I’ll arrange nearby rest rotations.”

    Samson stopped him at once.

“The surveillance stays in place. Rotate the night watch. Record everyone who enters and leaves. We’ll investigate them one by one afterward.”

The moment Rodney heard that, he perked up immediately.

    “Yes, Captain.”

Then he went off to make the arrangements.

Watching him leave, Samson let out a quiet sigh.

With Rodney’s temperament, he was an excellent squad leader. But he lacked the talent for broader command.

    Samson found that regrettable.

Back in Wang Yun’s room, the attendant soon returned with the prepared food.

    Knock, knock, knock.

“Sir, your late-night meal is here.”

Wang Yun went to open the door.

The attendant laid out the food on the dining table in the room and said, “Sir, you can just leave everything after you’re done eating. I’ll come collect it tomorrow.”

    Wang Yun nodded.

Just then, the two who had gone to cash out finally came back. Their laughter could be heard from a long way off. Each of them dragged two large suitcases into the room.

    “Brother Wang Yun, look.”

Baren’s face was split with a grin he could not hide.

Still smiling, he handed one of the cases to Wang Yun.

“Here’s the money you won tonight.”

Wang Yun nodded, took the case, and casually set it aside.

Seeing that the other two guests had returned as well, the attendant quietly withdrew. On the way out, he thoughtfully closed the door behind them.

Wang Yun calmly called the two men over.

    “Come eat something first.”

Colin set his own two cases aside and came over as well.

“I’m starving. Good thing there’s food.”

The two cases in his hands were his and Baren’s—one for each of them.
