Chapter 158: The Holy Light Shines
by tinytreeThe potency of the Holy Light quickly made itself known, particularly among the rabbitfolk and mousefolk whom Morin had identified as devout believers.
Wu Qingsong didn’t directly involve himself in their intimate sermon gatherings. Instead, he discreetly visited the temple before the sermons began to activate Alice’s Holy Light power.
According to Ram’s reports, a considerable number of rabbitfolk and mousefolk were evolving into devout, and even fanatical, believers. They not only worked with exceptional diligence but also took every chance to spread the tales and miracles of Xuanyuan to other beastfolk, showing no tolerance for any form of doubt.
Ram had liberated a portion of them, granting them the status of free citizens in Orgrimmar. They could earn wages, live in improved housing, and even roam freely within the territories of Elmons Mine, igniting even more enthusiasm and zeal among the remaining slaves.
Yet, what truly tipped them into a frenzy was a real miracle.
On a late autumn afternoon, while Wu Qingsong narrated fairy tales he had altered by his own whims to the elite members of the Beastgirl Sisterhood, Morin rushed over, interrupting him.
“What’s the matter?”
“My Lord, a believer’s wife is having a difficult childbirth,” Morin said, drenched in sweat. “Their whole family are devout believers, recently blessed by your grace to become citizens, but then this happened!”
“Where are they? In their home?” Wu Qingsong immediately asked.
“Now they’re in the temple, praying to Xuanyuan!”
“Let’s head there immediately,” Wu Qingsong said.
Difficult births were a common and deadly occurrence among beastfolk, even more so for species like rabbitfolk and mousefolk, which typically gave birth to three to four offspring at a time. Early marriage and childbearing significantly contributed to these complications. In a world where death loomed ever-present, many beastfolk rushed into marriage and childbirth before reaching maturity, posing significant risks.
Previously, there had been cases of dogwomen dying from difficult births. At those times, Alice’s powers had not yet awakened. Now, Wu Qingsong would not stand idly by, regardless of whether the afflicted was a devout believer or not.
They arrived swiftly at the temple’s back door, where the pregnant woman lay inside, moaning in pain, her voice weak.
Alice was already there, awaiting them. Wu Qingsong promptly activated her abilities. After she meticulously showed her respect to Wu Qingsong, following the rites Morin had established, she quickly followed Morin to the pregnant woman’s side.
“Remind them about hygiene,” Wu Qingsong suddenly remembered, urgently instructing Ling. “Tell them the scissors for cutting the umbilical cord must be cleaned and soaked in strong alcohol, and anyone helping with the delivery must wash their hands thoroughly, ideally soaking them in alcohol too. The wrapping for the baby must be clean. Beck, quickly get these supplies from Ram, and Ling, you and Liuli help out!”
Beck immediately nodded and departed.
Wu Qingsong, standing at the temple’s back door, found himself unable to help, merely overhearing the prayers inside growing louder while the voice of the laboring woman seemed to regain some vitality.
He was certain the Holy Light would safeguard the lives of both mother and child, but what if the baby couldn’t be delivered naturally? Was he to suggest they attempt a cesarean section? Yet, that seemed overly complex.
While he pondered, Ram arrived with a few others, including Beck, carrying the items he had requested.
“You know about childbirth?” Ram asked, somewhat astonished.
“Just the basics,” Wu Qingsong replied with a touch of embarrassment.
Ram shook her head and promptly entered the temple, where a brief commotion ensued, likely the pregnant woman’s family expressing their gratitude to Ram, as he heard her reassuring them not to be anxious.
Beck stood with him outside, waiting. After a seemingly endless wait, the soft cry of a newborn pierced the silence, followed by more cries that filled the temple with the din of new life.
Ram eventually walked out.
“Three boys and one girl, all healthy.”
Her demeanor inexplicably appeared somewhat melancholic. Unsure of why she felt that way, Wu Qingsong nonetheless embraced her gently.
“Wu, we…” Ram began, her cheeks flushing slightly.
However, at that moment, the rabbitfolk approached them with their children and knelt down in front of them, filled with gratitude.
Wu Qingsong quickly urged them to stand up. Liuli, cradling a tiny white bundle, excitedly said to him, “Wu, look how cute the baby is!”
“Do you even know how to hold her?” Wu Qingsong admonished. “Be careful not to drop her.”
The baby appeared to be a girl. She had very little hair, making her almost indistinguishable from a human infant.
Luli held the baby who suddenly started crying.
“Is she hungry, perhaps?” Wu Qingsong suggested. “Let them go back to breastfeeding.”
After receiving profuse thanks from the rabbitfolk, the children were carried back. Liuli looked after them wistfully, then suddenly blurted out, “I really want a baby too… Wu, can we have a baby?”
Wu Qingsong almost choked, thumping her on the head as he exclaimed, “What kind of nonsense is always running through your head! You’re still a child yourself, what business do you have thinking about having babies.”
“Wu, you hit my head again! You’re so mean,” Liuli pouted, rubbing her head in feigned injury. “That rabbit mom is the same age as me. If she can have babies, why can’t I?”
“Rabbitfolk naturally mature earlier than your catfolk,” Wu Qingsong couldn’t help but give her head another firm rub. “You, stop filling your head with these pointless thoughts all day. Having babies… You’re still way too young for that.”
Liuli finally screamed and ran off, with Ling giving Wu Qingsong a peculiar look before following her.
“Ram, what was that earlier?”
“Nothing,” Ram replied, smiling and shaking her head. “It’s nothing now.”
This minor episode quickly became common knowledge among all of Orgrimmar’s official residents. Surprisingly, a few days later, Morin informed Wu Qingsong that deerfolk visited the temple, hoping to hear his sermons and become followers of Xuanyuan. Even dogfolk, who had previously scorned Morin and the rabbitfolk, began to quietly enter the temple, volunteering to follow Xuanyuan.
Days later, Wu Qingsong even noticed the “Wu” character amulet around Ram’s neck.
This took him by surprise.
“Ram, you?”
Others might not be aware of what he had done, but Ram was certainly aware of the origins of the so-called church.
“I think the Wolf God wouldn’t mind,” Ram said. “If this is the god you believe in, then He should become my belief too.”
