Chapter: 163 Serious Injury
by tinytreeUnder the wound’s pain and the weakness curse, Alvin finally passed out completely, which caused his guards to descend into total chaos.
With the strict military discipline of the House of Osaga, as Alvin’s personal guards, they would face severe punishment if anything irreversible happened to him.
Angus quickly found several doctors from nearby territories, but treating hunters and slaves without power or status was one thing. No matter the outcome, there were no consequences. However, on the way, when they learned they were to treat a son of the Marquis Osaga, even if only a half-elf, their faces turned as pale as ghosts.
“I am really incompetent!”
Several of them swore they were actually quacks, barely stopping short of calling themselves murderers. Alvin’s guards were furious with such reactions, but in such a situation, they couldn’t force them to proceed at knifepoint.
If they were indeed incompetent and turned a simple fracture into a fatal condition, whose fault would it be?
“Lord Tagraedi! This happened on your territory, you must take responsibility!”
In the end, they placed the blame squarely on Wu Qingsong’s shoulders.
“What can I do about this?” Wu Qingsong said with an innocent face. “I wasn’t even there at the time!”
This left the mastiffmen guards speechless. Wu Qingsong had already quietly lifted the curse on the horse, calming it down. One of the mastiffmen guards went to check the horse repeatedly but couldn’t find any issue.
It wasn’t injured, nor did it show signs of having eaten anything abnormal. What exactly caused its sudden frenzy?
What baffled them even more was that Alvin’s skills and horsemanship were second to none among them. How could he have fallen from the horse and sustained such serious injuries under those circumstances?
It was utterly baffling!
Wu Qingsong contributed all the best medicinal materials he had on hand, making everyone around him appear frantic and busy. A few hours later, Beck finally arrived with four or five doctors, as well as the city lord and the sheriff.
“Lord Osaga!”
Baines and Griffin nearly tumbled into Alvin’s room in their haste. Their appointments were arranged oversteppingly by Marquis Osaga, and they were well aware of the fate of their predecessors. Hearing that Marquis Osaga’s son had fallen from his horse and was injured here, they were as agitated as if they had been stabbed, bustling about in urgent activity.
If it weren’t for their help, with Beck’s capabilities alone, it would have been quite unlikely to bring all the doctors from Esola over in such a short time.
Wu Qingsong quietly nodded to Beck. With the two of them here, he could temporarily step back and extricate himself from this situation to figure out a real solution.
Alvin’s severe injury was also unexpected for Wu Qingsong, but since he was unconscious and his guards lacked initiative, this might have been the best outcome.
The doctors from Esola were worried after examining Alvin’s injury. With the thigh so severely swollen and the patient’s distinguished identity, they didn’t even have the courage to touch and examine the condition of the bones inside. For a commoner with such an injury, the only method would be a rough repositioning followed by medication and stabilization with splints. Whether it would heal and to what extent was entirely up to luck.
Based on their experience, the best outcome for such an injury would be lifelong instability and inability to stand properly, with legs of differing lengths. If unlucky, it wasn’t impossible for the pain to persist for a lifetime.
But with the city lord and the sheriff looking utterly distraught, who would dare to speak such words?
“How is it, exactly?” Griffin erupted in anger.
This matter concerned his position and even his life. While everything could potentially be blamed on Wu Qingsong, who knew what the final outcome would be?
“My Lords, with such an injury, perhaps only the priests from Targal, or even Riniconia’s temples, might have a chance at healing…”
After quietly conferring among themselves, the doctors decided to deflect responsibility, ensuring it wouldn’t stick to them.
“But…”
Baines glanced at Griffin. It was unrealistic to send Alvin away. The only option was to send for the priests. Informing them that the patient was the son of the Marquis Osaga would likely ensure their cooperation, but even dispatching a fast rider for help, it would still take at least two to three days for someone to arrive. Alvin looked as though he might die at any moment. Could he hold on until then?
“We could send someone to call for the priests while transporting Lord Alvin to Esola,” Wu Qingsong suggested at that moment.
His main goal was to get this troublemaker away from his location. Otherwise, with everyone gathered here, it would backfire.
“How could that work?” Baines hastily interjected. “The lord’s wounds cannot withstand any more movement.”
If Alvin stayed, the responsibility would fall on Wu Qingsong, who at most would be blamed for negligence. But if Alvin was transported to Esola and something happened to him there, Baines’s own responsibility would greatly increase.
“First, let’s slightly stabilize his leg with wooden boards, then have people take turns carrying him to Esola, making sure he won’t be further injured. The facilities in Esola are at least much better than here, and he could receive the priests’ treatment sooner,” Wu Qingsong said with a mournful expression. “The lords can see for themselves, the conditions here… If Lord Alvin stays, I’m afraid it might adversely affect his injuries.”
Baines and Griffin were strongly opposed, but the guards were persuaded.
Orgrimmar, as a town that never really developed, could be said to be well-planned and built. However, because Wu Qingsong himself did not seek luxury, all the rooms in the town were very small, with simple decorations and utensils, and there weren’t even many candles, using pungent oil lamps for lighting instead. From the guards’ perspective, it was unbearably shabby.
What made the guards even more dissatisfied was that the maids Wu Qingsong sent were all rough and tough, matronly beastwomen.
These inconveniences might have been tolerable before, but with Alvin suffering such a severe injury, not to mention the cramped space in the small room that couldn’t accommodate many people or items, they would have made a fuss if they hadn’t already seen that all the rooms were only this size.
Now, with only Alvin’s condition in their minds, Wu Qingsong’s argument that staying would be detrimental to his injuries quickly gained their agreement.
“How long will it take?” asked the leader of the guards.
“I’ll assign more people to escort the lord throughout the night, and we should be able to arrive by tomorrow morning.”
“And if something happens to Lord Alvin on the way, who will be responsible?” Baines asked.
“I’ll bring all my men, surround the area with shields for protection against the wind and to prevent accidents,” Wu Qingsong said. “If anything happens to Lord Alvin on the way, I’ll take full responsibility.”
“Alright, then get on it immediately,” the guard leader said.
Wu Qingsong then had someone directly dismantle one of the walls of the room. Using several thick logs threaded through the bed frame, eight houndmen coordinated to steadily lift the bed.
Thick silk quilts were used to keep Alvin warm, and a circle of large shields was erected around for both protection and windbreak. This arrangement seemed to be without issue.
“Let’s set off immediately!” the guard leader then said.
As everyone escorted Alvin forward, Baines and Griffin finally found an opportunity to quietly ask Wu Qingsong about the incident, questioning him about how he could let the son of the Marquis suffer such a serious injury.
“I’m truly wronged!” Wu Qingsong immediately began to protest. “I had to step away for a bit and didn’t see what happened. But many people saw that it was Lord Alvin’s horse that suddenly lost control and threw him off and then stepped on his thigh. Gentlemen, at the time he was just returning to the city from the competition grounds, a mere few hundred meters. If I had known his horse would get startled, I would have been willing to carry him back to the city on my back, even if it meant acting as his horse.”
“What’s the use of saying this now,” Baines said. “Tagraedi, let me tell you! If the Marquis really investigates this, don’t even think about pushing the responsibility onto us!”
