Chapter 140: Why Compete with a Cheater
by tinytreeAt six o’clock, as if he had an internal alarm clock, Xiao Yu opened his eyes. He turned his head to look outside the window, a smile forming on his lips.
‘Sis is probably still lazing in bed, right? Morning light and dew awake, though not together, we share the same heart. Good morning, sis, even if we aren’t in the same bed.’
Getting up, Xiao Yu washed up and got dressed at lightning speed. It was exactly 6:30 when he walked out of his room.
Guo Qiang was already up and had bought breakfast. The two ate while driving the car borrowed from the criminal investigation team.
At seven o’clock, everyone gathered in the meeting room. Xiao Yu was the first to leave the room.
“Let’s go to the scene.”
Investigating a case definitely required visiting the scene.
S County had a reservoir a dozen miles away from a certain village. Xiao Yu was squatting on the dam. King Butterfly’s Nose was useless because it was open air, so there was no scent to detect.
With Falcon’s Eye activated, Xiao Yu walked step by step on the dam until he stopped, noticing some faint footprints.
Xiao Yu shook his head. The depth of the footprints was off. Under ‘Falcon’s Eye,’ it was clear these footprints were from someone walking normally. If someone was dumping a body, carrying or dragging it, the footprints would be deeper due to the weight.
Xiao Yu continued walking step by step and then stopped again.
Huh?
He slowly squatted down, carefully examining a depression that looked like a footprint. It wasn’t really a footprint, more like a depression made by something stepping on it.
It looked similar to a footprint but lacked the shoe tread, making it easy to overlook with the naked eye.
But it couldn’t escape Falcon’s Eye.
Guo Qiang squatted down, looking at the depressions.
“It’s strange, they look like footprints but not quite.”
“No, they are footprints.” Xiao Yu smirked and had one of the officers bring over the forensics tool kit. He opened it and took out a stack of shoe covers.
First, he put one on his foot and pressed it onto the dam ground. It still left a mark.
When Xiao Yu put on five shoe covers and stepped again, the marks matched.
“Looks like the killer put something over their shoes. Have they been watching too many movies? They actually know this trick?” Xiao Yu scoffed. “As for the depth and angle of the footprints, it suggests they were carrying the body. The angle of the footprints would differ if they were holding the body or carrying it on their back.”
The team members looked at Xiao Yu with astonishment, as if they were looking at a deity.
Guo Qiang, however, wasn’t surprised by Xiao Yu’s analytical skills. He still remembered Xiao Yu’s first day on the job, at the scene of the Warehouse Murder Case. Xiao Yu had immediately identified it wasn’t the primary crime scene just by looking at the footprints.
So this was no big deal.
Following the footprints, Xiao Yu walked step by step to the edge of the dam. He slowly looked up at the reservoir.
“Considering an average person’s strength and the weight of a body weighted with stones, this is where they threw the body.”
Silent and shocked, Qian Long stared at Xiao Yu.
Amazing!
When Bu Wenhui’s body was discovered, it was floating at this exact location.
“So then…”
Xiao Yu turned and continued following the prints, walking slowly along the path. When he reached a small path, he stopped.
“The footprints are getting shallower?” Xiao Yu muttered to himself. “And they’re getting more scattered.”
Why were the footprints getting shallower?
Because there was no body on him now, his weight was lighter, so the footprints would naturally be shallower.
What did this indicate? The person picked up the body here and walked towards the reservoir. So, how was the body transported to this spot? It definitely wasn’t carried on the back the whole way. It must have been some kind of tool.
Xiao Yu squatted down and closely examined the ground on the small path. There were many footprints and tire marks. The footprints belonged to pedestrians, and their walking patterns seemed normal. As for the tire marks… most of them were from motorcycles.
A motorcycle was used to transport the body. Xiao Yu blinked a few times, carefully observing.
“Why are there no turning marks here? The tracks just go straight forward, without returning the same way?”
Xiao Yu bent over, his face almost touching the ground, examining the tire marks. His eyes moved slowly, and his body moved along with them until…
Xiao Yu stopped, fixing his gaze on a specific tire track.
‘Is it this one?’
When carrying a body, footprints would be deeper. Likewise, when a motorcycle carries a heavy load, the tire marks would be deeper. These marks, however, were very subtle and hard to distinguish with the naked eye.
But Xiao Yu had an advantage.
With his Falcon’s Eye, he could instantly discern the depth difference.
“Record this tire track,” Xiao Yu stood up and gave the order.
How to record a complete tire track?
When a motorcycle’s tires rotate, the entire track appears.
What’s the use of this?
Aren’t there many motorcycles with identical tires? How can you differentiate them?
Wear and tear.
Different degrees of wear result in different tire marks. Even if it’s the same type of motorcycle, unless they’re all brand new, the wear and tear on the tires will never be identical.
Two police officers squatted down with cameras, carefully photographing and recording the complete tire marks.
After the team members finished recording, Xiao Yu gave the order again, “Find this motorcycle.”
A few officers left. Xiao Yu watched them leave, smiling. If they couldn’t handle this simple task, they’d really be useless teammates. Clearly, that wasn’t the case. Anyone assigned to the task force was undoubtedly the elite of the Y City police system.
Two hours later, the motorcycle was found. It was discovered in a village, but not in the one where the suspect Dong Qi lived, but in a neighboring village.
There were many motorcycles in the village, about a dozen or so. Not many were the same model. By comparing the tire wear marks, they identified the vehicle involved in the case. This task was too easy for experienced detectives.
Because it was so easy, many team members, including Qian Long, felt embarrassed. They had been investigating for days without any leads, and Xiao Yu found one after just a quick site inspection. What did this mean?
Their faces felt like they had been slapped. It hurt a lot.
If Xiao Yu knew what they were thinking, he would have laughed out loud.
‘Competing with someone with hacks like me? If you had the Falcon’s Eye, you could do it too.’
And now…
Seven or eight police officers stormed into a household’s courtyard.
Bang!
A warning shot was fired.
“Don’t move!”
Several black pistols were aimed at a terrified couple.
This was a murder case, and the victim was a police officer. The warning shot had already been fired. If anyone dared to resist, the officers wouldn’t hesitate to shoot.
At this moment, Xiao Yu walked in, not even glancing at the couple. He approached a motorcycle, bent down to sniff it, and his expression instantly turned cold.
Found it!
