    Chapter Index

“Who rode the motorcycle to the reservoir five nights ago?” Xiao Yu coldly stared at the couple kneeling with their hands on their heads.

Now was not the time to discuss human rights. A police officer had died, and the death was extremely gruesome. If Xiao Yu wasn’t keeping the others in check, what do you think they would do to this couple?

The woman was so scared she wet herself. Xiao Yu sneered.

‘What are you afraid of? If you haven’t done anything wrong, would you really be scared enough to wet yourself in front of the police?’

His gaze shifted to the pale-faced man. With his sharp features and skinny build, he looked to be about thirty-six or thirty-seven years old. The man couldn’t meet Xiao Yu’s gaze and remained silent.

‘Not going to talk, huh? People can be so stubborn. Why don’t you appreciate the chance given to you?’

Xiao Yu stopped looking at the couple and coldly said, “Take them back. I don’t care what methods you use, get me the information I need.”

Four team members grinned viciously, lifted the couple up, and escorted them to the police car.

Xiao Yu didn’t leave. Instead, he walked into the couple’s house. Entering the room, he activated the Monarch Butterfly’s nose, and his expression changed. A mix of sorrow, helplessness, and anger appeared on his face.

    This was the place.

He slowly walked to a room that looked like a storeroom. Xiao Yu’s expression grew colder as he bent down to look at a wooden board covering the floor.

    What’s so interesting about this?

Nothing, really. But there was the smell of blood coming from underneath. Human blood!

Crouching down, Xiao Yu lifted the wooden board. A dark cellar appeared before him. Many rural homes had cellars for storing items. Some of these cellars were located outdoors, while others were inside.

These were ancestral methods left behind for the benefit of future generations. Unfortunately, some have twisted this wisdom into tools for murder.

Shifting his gaze, Xiao Yu found an electric switch and flipped it on. The cellar below immediately lit up, revealing a wooden ladder. Xiao Yu slowly climbed down. The stench of blood grew stronger.

Standing on the ground, Xiao Yu surveyed everything inside the cellar. There were radishes, potatoes, and cabbage. The floor was covered in a layer of yellow soil, from which the smell of blood emanated.

Was this the primary crime scene?

    But…

Xiao Yu’s face showed growing confusion.

Why? Who had the audacity to harm a police officer?

It wasn’t that Xiao Yu looked down on ordinary people or those from rural areas. Without any grievances or conflicts, why would anyone go mad and kill a police officer?

“Was it that suspect… Dong Qi?” Xiao Yu muttered, narrowing his eyes.

He recalled from the files that Dong Qi’s family had threatened and insulted the fallen officer, Bu Wenhui. What kind of family dared to treat the police with such contempt? How arrogant.

The forensic team soon arrived. After examining the scene and extracting blood samples from the yellow soil, they even found a blood-stained spoon.

Remembering the empty eye sockets of the deceased officer, Xiao Yu took a deep breath and exhaled sharply. If he didn’t, he feared he might lose control.

Two hours later, the forensic results were in. This was indeed the primary crime scene of the murdered officer, Bu Wenhui.

The four team members also returned, with grim expressions, and reported a result that made Xiao Yu’s face change slightly.

The person who killed Bu Wenhui was Dong Qi.

    Why did he kill him?

Dong Qi had always been mentally unstable. At thirteen, he stabbed someone from the same village, and at fourteen, he was sent to a juvenile detention center. By sixteen, he had left home to seek his fortune, amassing a considerable criminal record, including involvement in a human trafficking case for which he served six years in prison.

After his release, his activities remained unknown. However, the Dong family grew wealthier, and Dong Qi would return home during holidays, sometimes staying for a few months before leaving again.

Some villagers knew that Dong Qi was involved in selling children. There were rumors of him bringing a child home and then selling them in another county. These discussions were always held in private. No one dared to let the Dong family hear, as the entire family was known to be unhinged. Dong Qi’s mother was a known lunatic, and Dong Qi himself was a madman who truly dared to kill.

Yes, Dong Qi did kill. After knocking out a police officer, he brought him to this couple’s home, threatening them to throw the officer into the cellar and kill him.

Why did he choose this couple’s house? Because the man, Kong Xiangui, had once worked with Dong Qi but later stopped.

What did he do with Dong Qi? He sold people.

“Kong Xiangui, male, 37 years old…” Qian Long reported. “Sixteen years ago, he followed Dong Qi to engage in human trafficking. This wasn’t done in our province but in another one. According to Kong Xiangui, Dong Qi had a vast operation outside. He not only trafficked women and children but also controlled some beggars. Using extremely cruel methods, he would mutilate kidnapped women and children, making them pose as beggars. He even sold these beggars.”

Xiao Yu’s heart grew uneasy as he coldly said, “Go on.”

“Kong Xiangui quit eight years ago and returned to this city,” Qian Long continued. “According to him, Dong Qi had many subordinates in the past. However, Dong Qi was working for someone else, a bigger boss above him.”

“Big boss?” Xiao Yu squinted. “So, Dong Qi is just a pawn after all?”

“No, he’s a leader,” Qian Long replied coldly. “He manages most of the human trafficking operations. The big boss handles the channels, information, and takes a cut.”

“What kind of person can control a madman?” Xiao Yu chuckled coldly. “Did the couple participate?”

He was asking if Kong Xiangui and his wife were involved in killing Bu Wenhui.

“They did,” Qian Long answered grimly.

“Ha!” Xiao Yu shook his head. “It figures, during an avalanche, not a single snowflake is innocent.”

“This case is too big,” Qian Long said with a bitter smile. “It’s bigger than we could have imagined. We might not be able to handle it.”

This case involved murder, massive human trafficking, and numerous instances of maiming. How could a city’s police system handle something like this? Even the provincial department might not be enough, as this case spanned several provinces and cities.

“No worries, we can still investigate,” Xiao Yu said, his expression turning mysterious. “I have connections in National Security.”

    Qian Long. “…”

He stared at Xiao Yu in disbelief, as if he was looking at a god.
