    Chapter Index

    A day later.

In the interrogation room of the Criminal Investigation Division…

“How did Jia Yanli die?” Xiao Yu asked coldly, his eyes fixed on Gu Xuan.

Having been a cop for two lifetimes, Xiao Yu had long since stopped giving anyone special treatment or sympathy based on their gender. All the cases he had solved in the past had taught him one thing: when a woman turned cold-blooded, men often didn’t even come close to her level of ruthlessness.

Take, for instance, the major human trafficking case he cracked not long ago. The mastermind turned out to be a woman who had started her criminal activities at the age of eighteen. She was responsible for over a dozen deaths, maimed more than fifty people, and trafficked more than two hundred women and children. She controlled a large criminal organization, one that could even be called a crime syndicate.

When it came to female criminals, Xiao Yu’s experience had always told him not to go easy. Otherwise, his leniency could cost him his life.

“P-Police officer, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Gu Xuan stammered, her voice trembling as she tried to appear pitiful.

“I once heard a story,” Xiao Yu began with a sneer.  “There was a herd of wild sheep led by a head ram that feared no wolf attacks. This head ram not only led the strong rams in protecting the herd but also led them in hunting.”

Xiao Yu chuckled, “Would you believe it? The head ram set traps, driving a lamb outside the herd to attract the attention of a lone wolf. When the wolf approached, thinking it had an easy meal, the rams, under the head ram’s lead, launched an attack. They didn’t just scare the wolf away. They rammed it to death. But here’s the kicker. The story doesn’t end there. You’ll never guess what happened next. The sheep started eating the wolf’s meat. And the lamb that had been used as bait? It was the one feasting the hardest. This story taught me something: little lambs are the most dangerous. Sheep don’t just eat grass—they eat meat too.”

Gu Xuan stared at Xiao Yu, dumbfounded, completely at a loss as to why he was telling her this story.

“Your file, I’ve gone through it,” Xiao Yu said as he picked up a tablet, displaying Gu Xuan’s records.

“So there’s something I can’t quite figure out. Your grades in elementary and middle school were excellent, so why did you suddenly drop out in high school? And at that time, you even had a spot reserved for a top university. I dug a little deeper and found something interesting. Your mother was in a car accident, and you were in the car with her. Since there were no cameras in the area and no dashcam in your mother’s car, the driver who hit you fled the scene. When help finally arrived, your mother had succumbed to her injuries. Only you survived. The police took your statement afterward. You mentioned that in the daze after the crash, you vaguely saw a young couple getting out of the car that hit you.

“If they had called for help instead of running away, maybe your mother wouldn’t have died. But they ran, leaving you and your mother behind. You could say that their decision to flee, rather than the crash itself, is what killed your mother. It’s unfortunate, but with no surveillance footage, no dashcam, and the crash happening in a remote area, the police couldn’t track down that couple. After you were discharged from the hospital, you gave up on your education, on college, and started working alongside your father, who had been out looking for that hit-and-run couple. You spent four years searching, didn’t you?

“But then, two years ago, you and your father suddenly stopped looking. Your father shut himself in at home, and you… became a housekeeper. A housekeeper at Che Feiting’s home. That part’s strange. After searching for four years, why give up all of a sudden? And not just that, you quickly got involved with Che Feiting, didn’t you? He even fell for you hard, didn’t he? Willing to do just about anything for you, right You know, when we found that bottle of beta-blocker in Che Feiting’s home, his reaction was one of shock. But the look on his face told us that he recognized that bottle, that he knew exactly what it could do. His wife had a heart condition, so if that drug were mixed into wine or any other drink… well, it would trigger a sudden heart attack.

“Now let me guess. Maybe someone got close to Che Feiting with a specific purpose in mind. Something more than just romance, right? And when that purpose started to come together, could it be that this ‘someone’ tried to persuade Che Feiting to kill his wife? Of course, it probably wasn’t phrased as murder, more like, ‘If she dies, not only can we be together, but we’ll also inherit a fortune.’ But Che Feiting and his wife had been in love for two years, then married for seven. Nine years of shared history. It wouldn’t be easy for him to do something like that, would it? So, maybe that ‘someone’ took advantage of their position as a housekeeper and did something in secret. And then, the wife ended up dead.

“But somehow, Che Feiting found out, or at least suspected, who was behind it. Yet, he chose to stay silent. Why? Because he loved that ‘someone’ too much, perhaps? And that’s why, when he saw the drug bottle sitting on the wine rack, he looked like he’d just seen a ghost. He couldn’t wrap his head around why the bottle that killed his wife, the one that should’ve been destroyed, was suddenly right there in front of him. And when the police asked him about it, guess what he did? He kept his mouth shut because he knew exactly who had put that bottle there. What’s the reason? Was it because that ‘someone’ wanted to frame Che Feiting, to make the police suspect him? Once the police started suspecting him, they’d order a full autopsy on his wife, right? And then they’d uncover the truth and pin the murder on Che Feiting. The funniest part is, Che Feiting might actually be willing to take the fall because he loves that ‘someone’ so much. So why did that ‘someone’ do it? Why poison Jia Yanli, then try to get Che Feiting killed? What’s the reason?”

Xiao Yu looked at Gu Xuan, who was now trembling, pale as a sheet, and filled with terror. He smiled slightly, “Could it be that Che Feiting and Jia Yanli are the same couple who caused that hit-and-run six and a half years ago?”

Gu Xuan slumped in the interrogation chair.

“But then, something unexpected happened. Something that you probably didn’t see coming, right?”

Xiao Yu’s smile faded. “According to your plan, as soon as the police found the drug bottle, they’d perform an autopsy. But then, the body was stolen. This shows that you’re not the one who stole the body. In fact, you were counting on the police to check it. So, it looks like there’s another group out there with their sights on Che Feiting as well.”
