    Chapter Index

Night, in the Villa’s Living Room.

“Brother Wang,” Mu Qingwu said with a warm smile, showing great understanding as she personally served Wang Dong a cup of tea. “Have some tea.”

“Thank you!” Wang Dong quickly stood up, accepting the tea with both hands.

After all, she was a woman worth billions. How many like her were there in the country? The respect she showed was clearly because of Xiao Yu. If she didn’t want to show respect, who would he be to her?

“Don’t be so formal,” Mu Qingwu replied with an air of grace, sitting down beside her younger brother.

“And what about mine?” Xiao Yu grumbled, pretending to be dissatisfied.

“You never drink tea,” Mu Qingwu retorted playfully, knowing her brother was just messing around.

“But I want some too,” Xiao Yu said, blinking at her with a mischievous look.

Mu Qingwu shot her troublemaking brother a playful glare before getting up to fetch his drink.

“I swear, you’re impossible,” Wang Dong said, feeling a bit exasperated as he watched her leave. He turned to Xiao Yu, “With a wife like that, shouldn’t you be treating her like a queen?”

“Marriage is about balance,” Xiao Yu responded with a smile. “If one side overdoes it, life won’t be easy for either of them down the road.”

“Are you pulling my leg?” Wang Dong rolled his eyes, not buying it. “You’re newly married—do you think you can fool me, a guy with years of experience?”

“My dad always said that,” Xiao Yu shrugged. “My mom’s a strong-willed person, but despite that, they’ve been together for so many years with barely any arguments. They live in harmony, so I figure there’s something to learn from them.”

Wang Dong thought for a moment, then nodded in agreement. There was some truth to that.

When Mu Qingwu returned, she didn’t bring tea for Xiao Yu but instead handed him a glass of freshly squeezed juice. After sitting for a while, she excused herself, knowing there were things she wasn’t meant to overhear.

Wang Dong glanced at the juice in front of Xiao Yu, then back at his own tea, blinking in confusion.

“Weren’t you just saying you wanted tea?”

“Are you kidding me?” Xiao Yu laughed. “Drinking tea in the middle of the night? What, do I have too much energy or something? My wife would never give me tea to drink this late.”

‘I swear…’ Wang Dong felt an urge to punch him.

“This case isn’t going to be easy,” Xiao Yu said, his expression turning serious as he picked up the tablet. “It’s really not going to be easy.”

If it were, he wouldn’t have brought Wang Dong back to his house. The two of them continued to review the case together, the weight of the situation making Wang Dong’s face grow even more somber.

“Get me a gun permit,” Xiao Yu said offhandedly, still focused on the tablet. “The special kind that lets me carry it all the time. If you can’t do that, you might want to find someone else for this job.”

    Why the insistence?

Even in his previous life, Xiao Yu wouldn’t have taken on such a case lightly. The danger level was way too high, and one wrong move could easily cost him his life. Without a gun at his side, Xiao Yu wouldn’t even consider taking on this case.

And why a special gun permit?

Regular police gun permits only allowed you to carry a firearm during missions. Carrying one around freely? Forget about it.

“No problem,” Wang Dong agreed without hesitation.

“Huh, you trust me that much?” Xiao Yu was surprised.

“With anyone else, I can’t guarantee there wouldn’t be an accident,” Wang Dong said, smiling as he looked at Xiao Yu. “But with you? I know you wouldn’t even touch it unless it was absolutely necessary.”

Xiao Yu narrowed his eyes, studying Wang Dong closely.

“Stop staring,” Wang Dong chuckled, shaking his head. “It’s not because I know you so well. It’s because of how our big boss evaluated you.”

“Big boss? Evaluated me?” Xiao Yu was taken aback. “Brother Wang, you’re not pulling my leg, are you?”

“Nope.” Wang Dong’s smile faded as he grew more serious. “The big boss said you are a good kid.”

    Xiao Yu, “…”

‘Why does that sound kind of off?’

“The big boss is a great judge of character,” Wang Dong said earnestly. “Don’t let him down.”

Out of nowhere, Xiao Yu felt a heavy weight on his shoulders and frowned.

‘What’s with these people? Can’t they just live their lives without piling on extra burdens for others?’

Wang Dong picked up his phone and made a quick call. After he hung up, he turned to Xiao Yu, “The gun permit and your firearm will be delivered tomorrow. You know how it is with bullets. They won’t give you many. Even for us, getting extra is next to impossible.”

Xiao Yu nodded. He understood that perfectly. Having a gun wasn’t the issue. It was when there were too many bullets that things could get really complicated.

“This case has some serious issues,” Xiao Yu said, glancing at the tablet in his hand. “We both know that too many ‘accidents’ mean it’s not an accident anymore.”

    “Exactly,” Wang Dong agreed.

“But…” Xiao Yu looked up, meeting Wang Dong’s gaze. “Have you ever considered how terrifying it would be if someone could actually control accidents?”

“Control… accidents?” Wang Dong’s face immediately grew tense.

Every day, every hour, every minute, even every second, people could encounter accidents, witness them, or even experience them firsthand. But who could control an accident? That was impossible! No one could do that. If someone actually could… it would be terrifying. Because that was not something a normal person could do. It would be like a supernatural phenomenon.

“Don’t tell me there’s really someone out there with superpowers or something?” Wang Dong’s expression was complicated as he looked at Xiao Yu. “This isn’t some movie or novel, you know.”

“Haha!” Xiao Yu burst out laughing. “What have you been through that even your daydreams have gotten so cautious?”

    Wang Dong, “???”

“How could it be superpowers or magic?” Xiao Yu shook his head, still chuckling. “It’s just someone who’s too smart for their own good, planning everything down to the last detail.”

“Huh?” Wang Dong looked completely lost, not understanding what Xiao Yu was getting at.

“Brains.” Xiao Yu pointed to his head. “Do you know what the original purpose of inventing the computer was?”

    “Uh…”

Wang Dong was even more confused.

‘What’s this now? Are we diving into philosophical questions all of a sudden? Next, are you going to ask me how the Earth was formed?’

“Computers, you know, for computing—it’s right there in the name.” Xiao Yu shook his head. “The first computers were created to replace the human brain for tedious tasks, to bypass complicated processes, and to help humans calculate data that would otherwise be too difficult or time-consuming. Essentially, computers were designed to simulate things that humans can barely understand or calculate on their own. For instance, a computer could simulate the ‘accidents’ those killers set up, but for a human to do that? That’s nearly impossible, right?”

    “Right,” Wang Dong nodded.

“But here’s the problem,” Xiao Yu’s expression turned serious. “There’s someone out there whose brain can function almost like a computer, capable of performing complex calculations to simulate accidents. And they’re not just simulating these accidents. They’re actually making them happen.”
