    Chapter Index

After Yu Shaoyang was sent back to the detention center, Xiao Yu stood in the bedroom of the villa. He was about to simulate the crime scene.

“Entered the bedroom, they talked, argued, shouted…”

Step by step, Xiao Yu walked to the bed, his arms gesturing through the air, mimicking certain actions as he muttered, “After being provoked… murder?”

His left arm mimicked pulling something while his right hand reached for the telephone, pretending to wrap the cord around. His eyes quickly scanned the room as he went through the motions.

“No, this doesn’t make sense,” Xiao Yu stopped abruptly, frowning and muttering to himself, “At that time, Wang Mei was fully conscious, right? The struggle should have been intense. How could you control a woman fighting back with just one arm, all while wrapping the telephone cord around her neck? This isn’t a movie. Does that seem realistic?”

First off, controlling someone struggling with just one arm was already difficult enough. But trying to hold them down with one arm while using the other to strangle them with a phone cord?

    Not to mention…

Xiao Yu’s eyes roamed over the bed and the floor, where he didn’t find any signs of a struggle or anything left behind from a violent confrontation.

    Scientifically?

If this murder scenario was supposed to be correct, it would mean Wang Mei just sat there, letting Yu Shaoyang wrap the phone cord around her neck without any struggle or resistance, only to be strangled without a fight?

Who were you trying to fool?

His gaze shifted to the ceiling of the bedroom.

In a typical house, the interior was often outfitted with a false ceiling, mostly made of wood or other materials for aesthetic purposes.

Xiao Yu’s eyes were fixed on a particular spot on the ceiling—a small hole.

It was about one-third the size of a pinky finger.

This was one of the fifty-three spots where Xiao Yu had found traces of the surveillance cameras.

Of course, the camera was long gone now, only the wire remained.

    Where did those wires lead?

    Xiao Yu wasn’t sure.

Finding the source would be nearly impossible unless the whole villa was torn apart.

But even without finding it, Xiao Yu could pretty much guess.

Wherever the source was, it had to be extremely well hidden, and even if he did find it, it would likely be completely cleaned out by now.

“Could it be concluded that Yu Shaoyang’s supposed murder doesn’t hold up?” Xiao Yu pondered for a moment, “So, was there a third person involved? And if so, what method did this person use to make Wang Mei lose the ability to resist and cause Yu Shaoyang to fall asleep? Drugs? Or some other method. Wait a minute!”

He walked around the bedroom, inspecting the windows, the en suite bathroom, and various corners of the room.

Finally, Xiao Yu’s gaze landed on a wall sconce.

What was so special about the sconce?

Because there was a finger-sized hole in it.

He kept looking and found similar holes in five different places within the bedroom: the wall sconce, the ceiling light, inside the wardrobe, a corner on the floor, and even in the bathroom.

Using his Eagle Eye ability, Xiao Yu realized these weren’t just any holes—they were some sort of pipes.

“What were they used for?” Xiao Yu wondered aloud.

He activated his Monarch Butterfly’s Nose ability.

Even though three years had passed, the villa had remained sealed off with no air circulation. If any scents had been left inside these pipes, there could still be traces.

Xiao Yu leaned in closer to the pipes and sniffed gently.

In an instant, he jumped back, his expression subtly changing.

    What was that smell?

Thanks to the system’s Medical Expert ability, his mind instantly provided the answer.

    Enflurane, Sevoflurane, Nitrous Oxide.

    What are these?

    Enflurane and Sevoflurane: anesthesia gases.

Nitrous Oxide: a chemical compound, also known as laughing gas.

Enflurane and Sevoflurane were commonly used during surgeries for full anesthesia. Nitrous Oxide, on the other hand, could cause hallucinations and put someone in an excited state.

    “So that’s how it was.”

Xiao Yu froze for a moment, recalling parts of Yu Shaoyang’s earlier statements.

“After I killed her in that moment, I felt my blood boiling, and an indescribable excitement.”

    Boiling blood? Excitement?

Would a normal person feel boiling blood and excitement after committing a murder?

“It’s pretty clear now. At that moment, Yu Shaoyang was drugged and unconscious. When he woke up, Wang Mei was already dead. The boiling blood and excitement… that was from the laughing gas.”

A cold glint flashed in Xiao Yu’s usually calm expression, “He must have experienced some hallucinations under the gas and mistakenly believed that he was the one who killed her.”

    The reasoning made sense.

Walking out of the bedroom and into the kitchen of the villa, Xiao Yu continued his investigation for a good half hour. After discovering five more small holes—five more pipes—in the kitchen, he stopped breathing for a moment.

A scene played out in his mind.

Someone first used the pipes in the bedroom to release gas, knocking both Yu Shaoyang and Wang Mei unconscious, then committed the murder.

Afterward, this person used gas in the kitchen to knock Yu Shaoyang out again, took Wang Mei’s body, dismembered it, placed it in the suitcase, and put it back in front of Yu Shaoyang.

Finally, when Yu Shaoyang went to dispose of the body, did this person use the same method again, secretly swapping the suitcase and replacing Wang Mei’s body with a dog’s corpse?

Could Yu Shaoyang really not notice the difference in weight?

Yes, he couldn’t tell. When the police found the dog’s body, though it had decayed to just bones, they tested it and discovered it was a large dog—a Caucasian Shepherd.

The weight of an adult dog easily exceeds 50 kilograms.

“Makes sense now,” Xiao Yu muttered. “The body was swapped before being buried, wasn’t it? All these complicated steps were to make Yu Shaoyang believe he was the one who killed her?”

    Well, it worked.

    “But why?”

Xiao Yu still couldn’t figure it out.

If there really was a killer behind all of this, why go through all that trouble to kill Wang Mei, frame Yu Shaoyang, and then switch the bodies?

    What was the point?

If Yu Shaoyang hadn’t been tormented by guilt, unable to sleep or eat, and eventually turned himself in, it seems like the police would never have known about this case at all, right?

Xiao Yu just couldn’t understand. Why go to such lengths? What did the real killer gain from it?

As he pondered, his phone rang at just the right moment.

“We found him,” Wang Dong’s voice came through the phone. “And get this, your guy, Deng Hua, just returned to the country. He’s on a flight heading to Bencheng City right now and will land in an hour.”

    Who’s Deng Hua?

The actual owner of the villa.
