Chapter 273: Are You a Dog?
by tinytree“Wang Dong, are you a dog?” Xiao Yu stood in the doorway, wearing oversized shorts and looking incredibly annoyed. His sleepy eyes glared at Wang Dong, who stood outside looking awkward. “Do you even know what time it is? It’s six-thirty in the morning. Tell me, why haven’t you just ascended to heaven yet? Why are you here banging on my door instead?”
“Well…” Wang Dong looked just as frustrated.
Sure, the mercenary incursion had been dealt with. The terrorist case was resolved perfectly. Even the S City case—the one involving murdered police officers and the stolen counterfeit printing plates—was about to wrap up neatly.
But here was the problem.
The guy who had been at the center of it all, the little brother who’d taken the lead in every one of those cases had run off.
He’d left the provincial task force, the National Security agents, and the special forces in the dust and went home.
Can you believe that?
“What, you don’t want the credit?” Wang Dong asked, half laughing, half crying as he looked at Xiao Yu.
“Heh!”
Xiao Yu sneered, giving Wang Dong a sideways glance. ‘Since when do I care about credit?’
“What, you’re not worried about getting in trouble for ditching?” Wang Dong tried a different angle.
“Heh!”
Xiao Yu sneered again, this time with even more disdain. ‘When have I ever been scared of getting in trouble?’
Wang Dong, “…”
‘Fine. This kid really didn’t seem to care about much at all.’
“Do you have anything else to say?” Xiao Yu narrowed his eyes, his tone sharp and sarcastic. “If not, I’m closing the door.”
“You’re such a comedian, little brother.” Wang Dong’s face twisted into an expression of pure frustration. “Your provincial boss is here.”
“Then let him come,” Xiao Yu said with a frown.
‘What’s the big deal? Whether I meet him or not doesn’t matter, right?’
“Our boss is here too,” Wang Dong sighed. “Go meet him.”
“Uh…” Xiao Yu’s expression changed. “I already promised my wife I’d spend time with her over the next few days. Tell the big boss we’ll meet next time.”
With that, he turned around, walked back into the courtyard, and closed the door.
Wang Dong, “…”
He stood there, stunned, his scalp tingling. For a long moment, he didn’t move. Then he shook his head.
‘Fearlessness can change the game. This kid really was something else.’
Sometimes, Wang Dong wished he could live as carefree as Xiao Yu. But not everyone had that kind of freedom.
“Who was it?”
When Xiao Yu returned to bed, Mu Qingwu murmured sleepily and turned over, wrapping her arms around him.
“It was Wang Dong, that annoying dog. Even though the case is over, he’s still bothering me.” He chuckled and hugged her close. “Go back to sleep, Sis.”
“Okay.”
Realizing it wasn’t anything important, Mu Qingwu rested her head on his arm and quickly drifted back to sleep.
The couple stayed in bed until noon.
After waking up, they went to visit Xiao Yu’s parents’ house and spent a happy, warm day together. But when they got home that evening, they found an elderly man standing at their front door.
‘What the…’ Xiao Yu almost cursed aloud.
The moment he recognized the man, his head buzzed. He was the head of National Security himself. Even so, Xiao Yu didn’t let go of Mu Qingwu’s hand. Instead, he walked up to the elderly man with her by his side.
“Salute!” Xiao Yu raised his hand.
“Hmm.”
The old man gave a kind smile, his gaze briefly sweeping over Mu Qingwu.
“Hello,” Mu Qingwu said graciously, her demeanor poised and elegant as she smiled.
“Hello to you too,” the old man replied with a nod. “Not bad,” he added with a grin. “Xiao Yu’s got good taste.”
Huh?
Mu Qingwu’s expression turned curious as she glanced at her brother. Even now, she didn’t know who the elderly man in front of them was, but she could tell he was no ordinary person.
“National Security,” Xiao Yu whispered, “The big boss.”
Mu Qingwu, “…”
She was stunned. No wonder her brother had that look on his face earlier.
“Would you like to come inside and sit?” Xiao Yu offered, moving to unlock the villa’s gate.
“No need. I was just passing by,” the old man replied with a warm smile. “Take care.”
He nodded politely toward Mu Qingwu before turning to leave. A small group of security personnel appeared and followed closely behind him.
The couple stood there, a little dumbfounded.
It wasn’t until the elderly man had completely disappeared from view that Mu Qingwu turned to look at Xiao Yu.
“Don’t look at me.” Shrugging, Xiao Yu shook his head. “I’m as confused as you are.”
“Well then, let’s go home,” Mu Qingwu said, brushing it off as she pulled her brother toward the house.
She didn’t care much about some big boss. Right now, all that mattered was her little brother, their baby, and their family. There weren’t many people or things left in the world that could draw her attention.
The same was true for Xiao Yu.
After being caught up in a case for so long, he hadn’t been able to spend time with his wife. Even if the world were ending, he was determined to stay by her side for the next few days. He wasn’t going anywhere.
Three days passed in a blink.
For those three days, neither Xiao Yu nor Mu Qingwu seemed to remember their responsibilities or the outside world. Like two little hamsters, they stayed home, sweetly enjoying their time together, completely immersed in their love.
Mu Qingwu leaned on her brother’s shoulder and asked with a soft smile, “Aren’t you tired of spending so much time with me?”
The two of them were curled up on the living room couch, watching cartoons—childish ones at that—but both were thoroughly enjoying themselves.
“Get tired of what?”
Xiao Yu grabbed a chip and stuffed it into his mouth, speaking through the crunch.
“Some people say…” Mu Qingwu chuckled softly. “That when two people stay together for a long time, their feelings start to fade. They slowly run out of things to talk about. Eventually, they get tired of each other, even exhausted.”
“Are you worried about that?” Xiao Yu grinned.
“What’s there to worry about? I still have the baby.” Mu Qingwu’s beautiful eyes curved into crescents, sparkling like autumn waters. “If my little brother ever changes, I’ll just live happily with the baby.”
“You’re getting sillier by the day!”
‘Boss, I’d like two pounds of true love, to take home and feed the dog,’ Xiao Yu thought with an exaggerated sigh. But as he held her close, his expression turned serious.
“Silly Sister,” he murmured. “If that day ever comes when our feelings fade, we’ll just build them back up again. If we run out of things to say, we’ll find new topics. If we get tired of each other, then we’ll start over and get to know each other again. And if it ever feels like too much…” He paused, looking deeply into her eyes. “With all the people in this world, it wasn’t easy finding you. I’m not letting go. And besides, I don’t have another dowry lying around to marry someone else.”
“You’re always sweet-talking me.”
Mu Qingwu’s eyes softened, filled with warmth as she snuggled closer to him like a gentle bird.
“Sis,” Xiao Yu said with a mischievous grin. “Can we be each other’s angels?”
“Mm!” Her smile grew even softer, sweeter.
“I’ll be the angel that annoys you.” Xiao Yu smirked slyly. “And you’ll be the…”
Mu Qingwu, “???”
“Hahaha!” Xiao Yu burst into laughter, his childlike amusement filling the room.
Watching her little brother’s playful antics, Mu Qingwu shook her head with a smile.
‘Having you around it’s really nice. Silly little brother.’
