Chapter 310: For Now, I’ll Treat You as a Human
by tinytreeOnce again, he arrived at the residential complex where the blind girl lived. Xiao Yu’s gaze swept across the rows of buildings.
Hidden in plain sight?
He wasn’t entirely sure.
The surveillance footage for the entire complex had been thoroughly reviewed. There was no sign of the suspicious man. Was it even possible to live in a community like this while avoiding all surveillance cameras?
Xiao Yu returned to the blind girl’s home.
Entering her bedroom, he stood by the window.
From there, he could see two residential buildings across from her window.
The building directly opposite offered the best view. If someone wanted to observe the blind girl’s room, it would have to be from the third floor or higher, since her room was on the fourth floor.
The layout of the buildings was uniform—seven-story buildings with duplex apartments on the top floor.
For surveillance, floors four or five would be ideal. Too low wasn’t good; too high wasn’t either.
Xiao Yu noted the scents of the blind girl and her guide dog before leaving the room. He then went to the building opposite.
The moment he stepped into the elevator, his pupils contracted slightly.
His deduction was correct.
In the elevator, he caught the scent of the blind girl and her guide dog.
‘Too late!’
Sighing inwardly, Xiao Yu followed the scent trail. Starting on the third floor, he searched up to the fifth floor, stopping in front of an apartment door.
Kodiak Bear’s Strength. Activated.
With a loud crash, the security door, along with its frame, slammed to the ground.
Xiao Yu stepped inside, his face cold.
It was a two-bedroom apartment, but it was empty. The scents of the blind girl and her guide dog lingered. In the bathroom, the stench of blood hung heavy in the air. He also found dog fur.
Leaving the bathroom, Xiao Yu walked to the kitchen.
His gaze landed on a freezer. He opened it.
Inside lay the body of a dog.
Xiao Yu touched it, pressing down firmly.
It wasn’t fully frozen. He estimated it had been placed there two to three hours ago.
His expression grew icy. He knew his deduction was correct, but he was still too late.
Why?
When he first arrived in K City and visited the blind girl’s home, the suspect had still been there. The blind girl and her guide dog had been there too. But in the hours spent investigating, the suspect had taken the blind girl away.
He’d figured it out—but he was late. Too late.
‘No, wait…’
Xiao Yu suddenly looked up.
Taking someone away would draw too much attention.
He killed the guide dog—would the blind girl not fight back?
Would she quietly follow you?
Did he do something to make her compliant?
Carry her? Drag her? Or…
Activating Falcon’s Eye, Xiao Yu scanned the floor carefully. Footprints—two humans and one canine, none wearing slippers. Size 37 and size 42 footprints.
In his mind, a scene unfolded.
Reconstructing the crime scene, a man and a woman entered with a dog. The dog’s footprints lingered near the woman. Then, they entered the living room and sat on the sofa. The man’s footprints led to the kitchen, stopping in front of the refrigerator.
This house had both a refrigerator and a freezer.
The freezer was new. Prepared specifically for something, maybe?
Xiao Yu opened the refrigerator and froze.
A small bottle caught his eye. He picked it up and removed the stopper. His expression darkened instantly. Ether—it was an anesthetic.
Returning to the living room, Xiao Yu re-examined the footprints by the sofa using Falcon’s Eye.
The woman’s last footprints were there, followed by a chaotic mess of dog paw prints.
Why were they so scattered?
At that moment, the girl must have been drugged.
The dog tried to protect its owner. That would explain the disarray of paw prints.
Looking around, Xiao Yu saw no more dog prints. The guide dog had been subdued.
Xiao Yu frowned.
How?
The area three centimeters from the dog’s eyes, just before the nose—if struck accurately, a single hit could incapacitate it briefly. Then… carry it to the bathroom, kill it, and place it in the freezer?
Standing up, Xiao Yu’s eyes scanned the surroundings, following the man’s footprints.
Another scene formed in his mind.
The man carried the woman into the bedroom.
How could he deduce this?
When a person is barefoot, the area of the sole in contact with the ground is normal. But carrying someone increases weight, causing the foot’s muscles to compress slightly, leaving a broader footprint.
The footprints led to the bed. Xiao Yu smelled the blind girl’s scent there.
Then the man’s footprints left the bedroom again. Still carrying her, they reappeared at the entrance.
‘So, he carried her out.’
Xiao Yu smirked coldly.
Finally, he deduced how the suspect left with the blind girl.
But here came the question.
Carrying someone—a target so conspicuous—how did he leave the complex?
Or…
‘Did you never leave at all?’
Xiao Yu stepped out of the apartment, ignoring the elevator. Instead, he headed for the stairs. As he climbed, his nose twitched slightly. On the seventh floor, he stopped in front of an apartment door. Sniffing, he confirmed that a man had recently left.
But the blind girl’s scent remained inside.
Was she dead or alive?
Xiao Yu’s expression grew complex as he took a deep breath. With a crash, the door burst open under his force.
He walked in step by step.
Through the stairs, he reached the duplex level. On a large bed, he saw the unconscious girl.
Finally, he exhaled deeply.
She wasn’t dead, not even injured. She was merely asleep.
Looking at her, Xiao Yu’s expression turned strange.
‘This is completely outside the bounds of your script, isn’t it?’
After a moment of thought, Xiao Yu chuckled. The smile on his face was equally peculiar.
He recalled countless clichéd scenes from novels.
For example, a killer on a mission to assassinate a target ends up falling in love with them. Of course, such contrived stories rarely end well. Either the killer dies, the target sacrifices themselves, or they both perish in a tragic ending.
‘So, little brother, what’s your ending?’
Xiao Yu’s face grew cold as he turned to leave.
‘Since the blind girl is still alive, I’ll treat you as a human being for now.’
