    Chapter Index

Watching her younger brother, who had now transformed into a devoted nanny dad, Mu Qingwu’s eyes shimmered with one word—happiness.

    What is happiness?

It’s holding the hand you want to hold, walking through the bustling world, and staying by the side of the person you want to be with.

It’s repeating the same routine without boredom, doing the same things without feeling dull.

There are no flowers that never wither, no waves that never recede, no lights that never dim.

But as long as you hold on, happiness never fades.

    “Let me serve you, sis.”

Setting down a basin of warm water, Xiao Yu placed his wife’s delicate feet inside and started massaging them while flashing a mischievous smile.

“How about a hundred kisses as a reward?”

“Haha.” Mu Qingwu chuckled, playfully scolding him. “You’ll get them.”

“For real?” Xiao Yu continued massaging her swollen legs, his voice filled with concern. “Just have one kid, okay? No need to suffer like this again.”

“But weren’t you the one saying we should build a whole soccer team for the country?” Mu Qingwu teased, her brows arched in amusement.

Xiao Yu laughed, amused by her remark. “Are we really going to be pigs?”

“Being pigs isn’t the problem.” Mu Qingwu stretched out her hand, gently stroking his handsome face. “It’s just a pity I’m getting old. I’m no longer the young girl I used to be.”

“Are you a dummy?” Xiao Yu’s laughter faded as he looked at her seriously. “A young girl isn’t defined by youth or beauty. It’s about courage, confidence, and a beautiful heart.”

    Just like himself.

Two lifetimes, yet he still chose the path of law enforcement. Still the same person, never once changed.

“What about me?” Mu Qingwu’s voice was soft, her gaze rippling with emotion.

“My girl, of course.” Xiao Yu smirked, teasing her. “Sis, do you know? There’s always one girl born in this world just to torment men.”

“You’re asking for a beating!” Mu Qingwu burst into laughter. “How have I tormented you? Before I got pregnant, I took care of you every day. After marrying this bratty younger brother, I realized something. The word bride actually means taking over for Mom to care for the eldest son.”

“Hahahaha…” Xiao Yu threw his head back, laughing. “You finally figured it out, huh? My dear little mama?”

“Shut up!” Mu Qingwu’s cheeks flushed red as she pouted.

“Seriously though,” Xiao Yu’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Sis, after you give birth, you should get a wavy perm, wear some denim shorts and a crop top. You’d be the ultimate goddess of allure.”

“Dream on!” Mu Qingwu snorted, not falling for his tricks.

“We men always like clean girls.” Xiao Yu pretended to think. “But… we still can’t resist making them dirty.”

“And what about you women?” Mu Qingwu’s expression shifted slightly.

    “Probably… the same.”

    “Hahahaha.”

    The couple burst into laughter.

“Before knowing you, I wanted to know your name.” Xiao Yu smiled playfully at Mu Qingwu. “After knowing you, I wanted to know…”

He stopped mid-sentence, eyes darting around.

“Nope, can’t say it. Too risky. The censorship gods are everywhere!”

Before Mu Qingwu could react, Xiao Yu grabbed the washbasin and ran.

“You brat! Just wait till I catch you!”

Mu Qingwu shook her head, laughing at his antics.

Her hands gently caressed her pregnant belly as she whispered softly, “Baby, look how naughty your dad is. He keeps bullying Mom. You have to be born soon, okay? Then you and I can team up to bully him back.”

As if in response, the baby kicked inside her womb.

A warm glow of motherhood spread across Mu Qingwu’s flawless face. Her smile blossomed like a field of flowers.

    She was happy, so happy.

    Midnight

Xiao Yu’s eyes snapped open. Even though his phone was on silent, he could sense the faint glow of an incoming call.

Mu Qingwu was fast asleep beside him.

He leaned down, placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, and slipped out quietly.

Upon arrival at the brigade, Xiao Yu immediately noticed his colleagues’ heavy expressions.

When he met Zhao Changshan and Zhou Tinghu, Zhao spoke in a grim tone, “Fang Hongding is dead.”

    Xiao Yu, “???”

Fang Hongding had been arrested and was in police custody. He suffered a fractured arm from the car crash, along with minor injuries, and was sent to the hospital under guard by two senior detectives.

Who could have killed him under their watch?

Even self-harm would have been impossible. Now they were telling him—he was dead?

“Grassland wolf.” Zhou Tinghu let out a bitter laugh. “When they were applying a cast on him in the hospital, a wolf smashed through the window and stormed in. It happened so fast, before our guys could react, the wolf bit through his throat. Then it escaped.”

    Xiao Yu was stunned.

A grassland wolf killed Fang Hongding?

    His mind buzzed with disbelief.

    ‘Are you kidding me?!’

Weren’t those wolves trained by Fang Hongding himself?

Would a trained beast turn on its own master?

Zhao Changshan and Zhou Tinghu had worn the same dumbfounded expressions when they first heard the news.

It seemed impossible. Yet, the impossible had just happened.

In that instant, a name flashed through Xiao Yu’s mind.

    Jiang Huiying.

As soon as he thought of her, Xiao Yu’s expression turned strange.

How the hell did she do it?

    ***

    Hospital, Surgery Ward

Xiao Yu entered the crime scene, his gaze scanning the shattered window, then shifting to the scattered glass on the floor.

His eyes fell upon a corpse, Fang Hongding’s corpse.

Even in death, his face was twisted with agony and shock, his eyes wide open.

    He had died unwillingly.

His neck was completely torn apart, his throat bone barely connected to a strip of bloody flesh. Chunks of torn muscle and flesh were scattered around the gaping wound.

Xiao Yu crouched down, staring at Fang Hongding’s face. At the lingering look of disbelief and confusion in his lifeless eyes.

“At a loss for words, huh? You didn’t expect to be killed by the very wolves you trained? Your refusal to close your eyes… is it from rage? Or from the shock that Jiang Huiying betrayed you?”

Xiao Yu’s eyes flickered with a complicated glint.

“She hated even you. Hated that you waited twenty years without avenging her sister. And just like I said, if you were a real man, you would’ve acted twenty years ago. But you didn’t. So, in her eyes, you weren’t even worthy of being called a man.”

    ‘That’s why she killed you.’

Xiao Yu slowly stood up, sniffing the lingering scent of wolf in the air.

He turned toward the shattered window.

Pushing it open, he jumped through. And strode into the night beyond.
