Chapter 47: Let’s Start with Falling in Love
by tinytree“Dummy, I was just kidding,” Mu Qingwu couldn’t help but laugh, seeing the shock painted across Xiao Yu’s face.
Thinking to himself, ‘Seeing how earnestly you’ve admitted your mistake, I suppose I won’t need a divorce.’
Xiao Yu rolled his eyes, “Where am I sleeping tonight?”
Mu Qingwu’s laughter lingered, her silence speaking volumes. With so many rooms, why even ask? He wanted to share a bed with her.
Why the silence on her part? Because she didn’t want to reject the idea.
Catching the sly smile creeping onto her brother’s face, Mu Qingwu issued a playful warning, “Don’t get any funny ideas, or I’ll call the police.”
“Ha!” Xiao Yu burst into laughter. “Sister, remember, I am the police.”
Caught off-guard, Mu Qingwu joined in the laughter.
Without any awkwardness or distance between them, Xiao Yu led Mu Qingwu back to the bedroom. After freshening up, he lay on the bed, his heart fluttering with nervous excitement. Could something more be about to happen?
As his sister walked out of the bahroom, meeting her soul-stirring gaze, Xiao Yu found a newfound serenity.
Mu Qingwu, in her pajamas, maintained her cool elegance. She glanced at her brother before making her way to the bed.
Xiao Yu scooted closer, wrapping his arms around Mu Qingwu.
“You promised.” Mu Qingwu’s expression was stern. “If men’s words could be trusted, anything could climb a tree.”
Xiao Yu grinned mischievously, sensing Mu Qingwu’s tension.
He didn’t push further and embraced her gently, “Sister, do you know how women used to refer to their significant others?”
“Um?” Mu Qingwu nestled in his shoulder, her body relaxed, blinking her gentle eyes.
“Originally, they called it ‘Xianggong’ during the Qing Dynasty, ‘Langjun’ in the Tang Dynasty, ‘Guanren’ in the Song Dynasty, ‘Mister’ in recent times, ‘Master’ in aristocratic terms, commonly ‘Husband’, and ‘Dear’ in trendy language… Sister, we’re legally married. Shouldn’t we pick one?”
“Ha!” Mu Qingwu laughed but remained silent.
“I have a secret.” Xiao Yu’s eyes twinkled, “Want to hear it?”
“Don’t want to.” Mu Qingwu’s lips curled upwards, “You look like a hoodlum right now.”
Xiao Yu, “…”
Too intelligent, too cool and detached. Trying to tease her only ended up embarrassing himself. Continuing this way, he might not hold back from doing something to her tonight. For instance, helping her realize the natural course of things.
“You shouldn’t overstep.” Seeing Xiao Yu’s intentions, Mu Qingwu lifted her head, hesitated briefly but still gently kissed Xiao Yu’s cheek, “I need some time.”
“Sister, you couldn’t possibly be…” Xiao Yu was astonished.
At 28, how could that be?
Mu Qingwu didn’t respond but nestled her face deeper into Xiao Yu’s shoulder.
My god. Xiao Yu’s face lit up with thrill. His parents were right. He had indeed stumbled upon incredible luck. A 28-year-old sister, and still a girl?
Girls deserve respect, a sense of ceremony, and no skimping on the essential steps.
Then, starting with falling in love seems right.
The next day, When Xiao Yu woke up, he discovered Mu Qingwu was still deep in sleep, genuinely this time.
This confirmed that she had let her guard down completely with him.
Xiao Yu smiled broadly, quietly rejoicing.
He remembered an elder saying, when a girl can sleep soundly in your embrace, It means that you’ve become a sanctuary for her, and you’ve secured a place in her heart.
He felt overjoyed.
He gently pressed a kiss on her serene cheek.
Getting up quietly, Xiao Yu washed up and hummed as he prepared breakfast.
When breakfast was nearly ready, Mu Qingwu descended the stairs. They shared a look and smiles.
“Come here, sister,” Xiao Yu invited.
Approaching, Mu Qingwu found herself enveloped in Xiao Yu’s embrace, receiving a gentle kiss on her lips.
A moment lingered.
Leaning against him, Mu Qingwu found comfort in her brother’s arms, while Xiao Yu cherished the scent of her hair.
“Sister, be my girlfriend?” he proposed softly.
“…Yes,” she consented.
“Hehe,” Xiao Yu chuckled, pleased.
“Fool,” she affectionately chided.
With this, they stepped into a relationship, embarking on love after their legal union. A sequence as unique as they were.
As was their routine, Mu Qingwu drove Xiao Yu to work.
Before stepping out, he embraced his slightly angry sister for a fervent kiss.
Entering the Criminal Investigation Brigade, Xiao Yu carried the essence of Mu Qingwu with him, though duty called.
The corpse robbery case awaited his thorough investigation.
Departing once more, Xiao Yu, seated beside Guo Qiang in the police car, found the situation bemusing, while two detectives from their team occupied the back seat.
This was to be his team, a small unit in formation. Yet, he hadn’t even made his trip to the province. The second-class merit was still pending, he was not yet a police inspector, nor had he been promoted to a section officer.
Xiao Yu thought to himself, ‘Is everyone in such a hurry?’
Well, the captain and the instructor seemed to be looking the other way.
If they were eager to follow, let them be.
The police vehicle left the urban area behind, heading directly toward the crematorium. Such facilities were usually not found within the city limits but were more often situated in the outskirts.
Of course, there were exceptions. Those in the know understood the reasons.
Upon arrival, the group of four made their way into the administrative building. After identifying themselves, they proceeded to the manager’s office. The crematorium had no ‘director’ per se. The manager held the top position.
The manager’s expression was one of calm curiosity upon greeting the four officers.
“Hello, we’re from the Criminal Investigation Brigade.” Xiao Yu eyed the manager, “We’re here to look into a case from four years ago!”
