    Chapter Index

Can even the most ruthless criminals be afraid of death? The answer is definitely yes.

A woman scared to the point of wetting herself, struggled frantically as national security personnel dragged her away like a dead dog.

“Scared now?” Xiao Yu mused aloud. “You must have never experienced the methods of the national security.”

He vividly remembered the last time he was involved in an investigation into a major case of corpse smuggling. After the interrogation by national security, the manager of the crematorium had a mental breakdown.

Although he didn’t know exactly what methods they used, just imagining them was enough to make his skin crawl.

“What methods does our national security have?” With the suspect in custody, Wang Dong was in high spirits and joked, “I am a decent man, you know?”

Xiao Yu gave him a sidelong glance.

‘Doesn’t saying that prick your conscience?’

“Don’t look at me like that,” Wang Dong chuckled, “As long as the country is in good order, what does it matter if we have to go through hell?”

Xiao Yu was momentarily stunned, his perception of Wang Dong shifted to one of deep respect.

He chose not to question whether such ruthlessness was justified. If everyone acted solely out of self-interest, the country would have rotted long ago. In a world where there was light, there must also be darkness, and some duties must be performed.

People like Wang Dong, who bear such responsibilities, were destined to walk in the shadows.

“Don’t celebrate too soon,” Xiao Yu said with a peculiar expression as he headed toward the shopping mall’s exit. “Things are about to get interesting.”

“Interesting?” Wang Dong’s heart raced uncontrollably, his composure shaken.

    What could it be?

    ***

Inside the interrogation room, the woman had confessed everything.

Her name was He Yu, 22 years old, a prodigy and top student since childhood.

She had been specially admitted to an elite university’s program for gifted youths. Fascinated by psychology, she excelled at hypnosis. Moreover, she had accidentally discovered a synthetic compound.

She created a new drug by combining “bath salts” with eleven different chemicals. This drug could temporarily eliminate pain sensations and induce hallucinations. When used in conjunction with hypnosis, it achieved a level of control beyond the comprehension of normal people.

Indeed, He Yu was a genius. But many geniuses are also known by another term: madmen.

It’s only those with wild minds who can conceive and develop even wilder inventions. This is a fact throughout history.

Could ancient humans have imagined future generations soaring freely through the skies like birds? Without such wildly audacious dreams, how could humanity have realized such wondrous innovations?

What was He Yu’s wild dream? She wanted to transform the world into a purgatory.

    Impressive, wasn’t it? Outrageous, right?

But why did she harbor such thoughts?

Her upbringing played a crucial role. Raised in a single-parent household, she was treated poorly by her father, who often abused her. Additionally, her peers disliked her. They isolated, bullied, and insulted her, and even her teachers showed her no affection.

A girl growing up in such a harsh environment and yet not breaking down mentally was a testament to He Yu’s resilience. Part of her strength came from an injured bird that had recovered under her care, a companion during her darkest times.

Tragically, after the bird passed away, leaving behind its offspring, He Yu’s mental state finally shattered.

Mental illness wasn’t the horror. The real terror was when a mental disorder wielded a formidable power and a dreadful drug.

At the age of eighteen, He Yu commenced her first experiment. Her test subject was none other than her father’s mistress–the very woman seen in the first video of this case, who carved her own face with a knife hundreds of times before finally killing herself.

As Xiao Yu guessed, every action must have a purpose.

He Yu’s reason for murder was twofold: experimentation and revenge–not only against her father but also against the entire world. She intended to turn the earthly world into a burning hell.

Fortuitously for her sinister plans, He Yu successfully completed her initial experiment using hypnosis and drugs. Subsequently, she delved deeper into hypnosis and continued refining her pharmacological concoctions. By the age of nineteen, she embarked on her second experiment.

She adapted to leveraging the internet, specifically the dark web, to procure various items. Things like mobile phone numbers and identification cards.

This also explained why the National Security Bureau couldn’t trace the mysterious livestream channel on the platform.

He Yu’s hypnotic skills and her chemical concoctions had been progressively perfected.

At twenty, she initiated her third experiment, followed by a fourth and a fifth, leading up to the sixth.

Originally, the plan was to conduct one experiment per year, but recently, He Yu had perfected her formula. Driven by an urgency to witness the fruits of her labor, she envisioned transforming humans into savage beasts that cannibalize each other and monsters that self-mutilate and devour their own kind. Next, she planned to mass-produce this drug and disperse it into the public water supply.

    That was the plan, until…

Regrettably, He Yu’s sixth experiment failed. Not just failed, but was interrupted by an unexpected event.

As the saying goes, man proposes, but God disposes.

An auxiliary police officer appeared, throwing her meticulous plans into disarray.

As Xiao Yu deduced, He Yu was exceedingly intelligent, far more so than most. Unable to accept such a setback, the highly intelligent He Yu found it hard to tolerate her plans being destroyed.

    The experiment had to continue.

He Yu then found herself in the interrogation room, confronting Xiao Yu and Wang Dong with a pale expression.

After listening to He Yu’s recounting, Wang Dong sunk into deep thought. Eventually, he habitually turned to look at Xiao Yu, and noticed an enigmatic smile playing on his lips, as if he had stumbled upon some amusing secret. Suddenly, Wang Dong remembered Xiao Yu’s remark back at the mall about how the situation was becoming interesting. Could it mean…

“You know how to hypnotize, don’t you?” Xiao Yu asked He Yu directly, “How about we do an experiment?”

    Wang Dong, “???”

Wang Dong looked perplexed, his gaze at Xiao Yu now tinged with a hint of fear, as if he were looking at a demon.

‘What the hell are you planning to do?’

He Yu seemed equally baffled, staring blankly at Xiao Yu. She was clueless about what he wanted.

Soon enough, He Yu’s handcuffs and leg shackles were unlocked, and she was freed from the interrogation chair. Xiao Yu had even prepared all the props she required for her.

Hypnosis is neither divine art, nor supernatural magic, nor is it akin to witchcraft. It is unrealistic to expect to hypnotize a stranger instantaneously without undergoing a process, developing empathy, and building trust. Attempting to hypnotize a stranger directly belongs in movies or novels, not in reality.

Confronted with He Yu at this moment, Xiao Yu let down his mental guard.

“Come on then,” Xiao Yu said, sitting in a chair across from He Yu, whose face was as pale as snow. “Use your most powerful technique to hypnotize me.”

He Yu remained silent for a long while, her gaze and expression shifting, turning peculiar as if she glimpsed some kind of hope.

She held two paper cups in her hands, each containing a glass ball.

At this moment, the glass balls spun continuously within the cups as He Yu shook her hands.

Xiao Yu obeyed the command, his eyes fixed on the paper cups and the rotating glass balls.

“Now, you need to relax, just relax a little bit more…”

He Yu’s voice softened, soothing like a mother comforting her child.

Music began to play. The tune was “Sleeping Sprite.”

    Time slowly ticked by… Four…
