    Chapter Index

Lin Xiao had no idea that Li Yunxi and Chen Xue were already plotting to track him down. At that moment, he was calmly descending Panlong Mountain in his Rolls-Royce, having already dismissed the race as a trivial affair.

He’d never intended to get involved with the people there. If not for Le Fangyun’s provocation, he would’ve simply taken the prize money and left without fanfare. As for Li Yunxi—though he found her pleasant, their encounter was too brief to warrant a farewell.

It was nearing eleven o’clock, and the night was deep. The deserted roads were empty, save for a few cars that occasionally sped past. Lin Xiao’s journey was swift, and he soon reached Yongnan District.

Yongnan District, the most underdeveloped and lawless district in Jinghai City, looked even more desolate tonight. The streets were nearly empty.

Worried that Yuan Yu was waiting at home alone, Lin Xiao took a secluded shortcut he had discovered days earlier. Though remote, it offered the quickest route to her place.

But he hadn’t gone far before his eyes narrowed. Up ahead, he spotted a familiar figure—curvy, disheveled, and limping into a narrow alley in a police uniform. It was Su Mengjia—the beautiful policewoman who had arrested him when he first arrived in Jinghai City, mistaking him for a member of the Hundred Seat Society.

Soon after Su Mengjia entered the alley, seven or eight burly men, brandishing machetes, followed in hot pursuit.

The leader’s face twisted into a malevolent smile.

“Officer Su, stop running. Give up; you can’t escape. But don’t worry, if you don’t resist, we’ll make it quick.”

Su Mengjia, trapped by the dead-end, spun around, her face flushed with anger. “Who are you? Do you realize what you’re doing? This is an assault on a police officer! Aren’t you afraid of the law?”

Being attacked off duty, Su Mengjia didn’t have her weapon with her. Now cornered, she hoped to intimidate them. Even though she felt it was a long shot, she had no other choice.

“Attacking an officer? Ha! Officer Su, are you naive or just plain stupid?” The lead thug laughed boisterously. “With which eye did you see me attack an officer? Who can vouch for that?”

“Did any of you see it?” he asked his henchmen.

“No, boss. Where are the police? I didn’t see any.”

“Haha, Officer Su, did you catch that? Think I attacked a cop?” the lead thug said, laughing. “I warned you not to stick your nose in others’ business, but you didn’t listen. Regretting now, are we?”

“Are you from the Hundred Seat Society?” Su Mengjia, putting pieces together from the thug’s words, asked with a glint of understanding.

“You catch on quick. But you’re too late,” the thug said with a smirk, his gaze lingering on Su Mengjia’s beauty.

“I’ve heard Officer Su is quite the beauty in the force. I’ve been in this game for years and never had the pleasure of a policewoman’s company. Perhaps today’s the day.”

    “Boss, I haven’t either.”

“Don’t worry. Once I’ve had my fun, she’s all yours,” he said with a sinister grin.

With a wave of his hand, his goons eagerly closed in on Su Mengjia.

Feeling the sting of her wounds and being surrounded by these menacing figures, Su Mengjia’s heart raced. Her face drained of color, filled with rising despair. Was this where her life would end?

Despite being born into a prominent family, Su Mengjia always admired the life of a police officer. Ignoring her family’s protests, she joined the Yongnan District Police, keeping her background a secret. Starting as a rookie, she swiftly rose to the rank of Captain of the Criminal Investigation Department in just a year.

Under her leadership, Yongnan’s law and order had greatly improved. But recently, she got wind that the dominant underworld force in Jiangnan Province was making moves into Yongnan District.

She had been targeting the Hundred Seat Society’s operations relentlessly. But she never expected them to be audacious enough to attack an officer.

Su Mengjia suddenly recalled Lin Xiao, whom she had previously mistaken for a member of the Hundred Seat Society. It was only later that she realized he might be part of the same team as her idol, the captain of the Dragon Sword Squad.

“I don’t know if you belong to the Dragon Sword Squad, but whether you do or not, I can no longer apologize to you,” she murmured.

Facing the leering men surrounding her, Su Mengjia knew that her situation was dire, possibly inescapable. Gritting her teeth, she pulled a small knife from her waist, ready to fight to the death. She would not let these lowlifes disgrace her, even if it cost her life.

Just as she braced herself, a voice suddenly echoed from the alley’s entrance.

“Officer Su, need some help?” Lin Xiao asked, standing calmly by the side of the road.

Seeing Su Mengjia’s disheveled figure, chased by the hulking brutes, Lin Xiao knew she was in trouble. After brief contemplation, he resolved to lend a hand.

His impression of Su Mengjia might not have been the best, but he did recall that her idol was the captain of the Dragon Sword Squad. Besides, as a police officer, she was now under attack, constituting an assault on law enforcement. Both morally and logically, Lin Xiao could not simply stand by and watch her be killed.

“It’s you?” Su Mengjia exclaimed, recognizing Lin Xiao. She had just thought of him, and his image was fresh in her mind.

“Quick, leave. Call the police,” she urged.

Though she suspected Lin Xiao might be a member of the Dragon Sword Squad, it was only speculation. Even if he were a member, he likely was just an ordinary one.

She was well-informed about certain aspects of the Dragon Sword Squad, knowing that official members retired at thirty unless they had fallen in the line of duty. Lin Xiao, only in his twenties and retired, could not have been an essential figure.

Now, confronted with these men, each agile, armed, and possibly…

Su Mengjia’s gaze fell to the waists of the leading man and his henchmen, noting the suspicious bulges. She was certain; those were firearms.
