Chapter 13: Re-Encountering Ning Xi
by tinytreeAs the sound of footsteps approached, the crowd instinctively parted, making way for a striking woman in a sharp black suit.
She was a woman in her twenties, adorned in an elegant office outfit, showcasing her dignified demeanor. Her melon-seed-shaped face, willow-leaf eyebrows, and bright, benevolent eyes radiated an enchanting aura as she walked.
Lu Yufei, who was in a state of panic, hastily rushed over, pointing at Lin Xiao and accusing him, “Assistant Ning, I’m glad you’re here. This man has been creating a ruckus here in the building. I ordered the security to intervene, but I didn’t expect him to be such a proficient fighter. You must—”
“Quiet,” she interjected.
Lu Yufei was prepared to continue his rant, but the elegant lady’s harsh words silenced him immediately. He dared not utter another word. The president highly regarded this woman, and he couldn’t afford to offend her.
A glimmer of surprise flashed across her eyes as she looked at Lin Xiao with a hint of a smile. “I didn’t expect to run into you here.”
“Indeed, quite a coincidence,” Lin Xiao said, somewhat taken aback upon recognizing the office lady.
This office lady was none other than Ning Xi, the beautiful woman he had encountered at the motel.
Ning Xi hadn’t anticipated running into Lin Xiao here either. She had previously thought their meeting was fleeting and unlikely to be repeated.
“Why are you here?” she asked.
“I heard about a security job opening, so I came to apply.”
“Security?” Ning Xi recalled Lin Xiao’s actions at the motel, then glanced at the surrounding security guards who looked pale and drenched in sweat. She nodded. “Indeed, it’d be a waste not considering a job in security with your skills. Come, follow me. I’ll lead you to the recruitment department.”
“Assistant Ning, this fellow came here to wreak havoc. Even though he’s a skilled fighter, with such a temperament, you might want to reconsider recruiting him into the security team.” Lu Yufei couldn’t help but express his concern, despite being surprised at Lin Xiao’s acquaintance with Ning Xi.
“Assistant Ning, you—”
“Your opinion isn’t needed here.” But before he could finish, Ning Xi cut him off coldly.
She was well aware of what kind of person Lin Xiao was. Despite this being their second encounter, she knew him because of his righteous intervention. Hence, she didn’t put any stock in Lu Yufei’s words.
“So, what’s the real story?” Ning Xi asked the nearby security guard.
“Assistant Ning, it happened like this…”
The security guard dared not conceal anything. Lu Yufei might be a company director, but Ning Xi was the president’s assistant. If they were caught lying, their future at the company would be in jeopardy.
“Excellent, Director Lu, I’ll report your actions to the president as they happened.”
After hearing the security guard’s account, Ning Xi glared at Lu Yufei with a chilling gaze and spoke with a cold, sarcastic smile.
“Assistant Ning, assistant Ning, let me explain… listen to me…” Lu Yufei nearly wet himself, frightened by Ning Xi’s intense gaze.
In the current economic downturn, jobs were hard to come by. He dreaded the thought of losing his job at the company. Gaining a similar position as his job inthe Brilliant Group was something he didn’t even dare dream of.
However, Ning Xi paid him no mind. Turning to Lin Xiao, she said, “Let’s go. I’ll take you to the recruitment department.”
Lin Xiao was surprised. The job he had been ready to abandon was now within reach again, which lifted his spirits. He nodded in agreement and followed her.
After flashing a smile at Lin Xiao, Ning Xi took the lead. Her white, slender legs, accentuated by her professional outfit, highlighted her impressive figure.
“By the way, those hooligans didn’t cause you any further trouble, did they? I heard from my aunt that they’re quite notorious in that area,” Ning Xi asked, leading the way.
“Don’t worry, I can handle it,” Lin Xiao said with a reassuring smile, opting not to disclose the subsequent events.
“That’s good to hear. By the way, this recruitment isn’t for an ordinary security position. The competition is quite fierce, so be on your guard,” Ning Xi advised with a hint of hesitation.
“I understand. I’ll be careful. Thank you.”
The recruitment venue wasn’t far. A large conference room on the third floor of the Brilliant Tower. They arrived at the recruitment location after only a short conversation.
Upon arriving at the recruitment venue, Ning Xi’s smile faded. Her expression turned serious as she pushed open the conference room door.
A dozen or so individuals, predominantly men, were already standing iinside. Each one was tall, heavily built and muscular. They radiated a formidable aura, clearly not the type to be taken lightly.
At first, Lin Xiao was taken aback, but he quickly realized these men were his competition for the security position.
Lin Xiao and Ning Xi’s entrance drew everyone’s attention. More precisely, all eyes were on Lin Xiao, who trailed behind Ning Xi.
They all recognized Ning Xi. She was the supervisor for this recruitment event. The man appearing behind her could only be a job applicant. However, when they noticed Lin Xiao, simply dressed, lean, and looking every bit the ordinary worker, many dismissed him with a shake of their heads, turning their attention elsewhere.
Lin Xiao remained unfazed by the collective scrutiny, maintaining his composure.
Simultaneously, upon entering the conference room, Ning Xi quickly made her way to the center of the room, announcing, “Hello everyone, there was a minor incident just now, but it’s been resolved. I apologize for the delay.”
The room fell silent; no one responded.
Undeterred, Ning Xi continued, “Hello, my name is Ning Xi, but you can call me Assistant Ning. I understand that all of you are here to apply for the security position. You’re also likely aware of the strength of our Brilliant Group, so I won’t dwell on that. Since you’re here for the interview, I presume you have confidence in your abilities. So, before we begin the interviews, does anyone have any questions or concerns?”
“Assistant Ning, I’d like to ask about the salary and benefits your company offers,” someone in the crowd interjected.
This question addressed what was on everyone’s mind. Even Lin Xiao grew serious, listening attentively.
“For this security personnel recruitment, once you pass the interview, you’ll be put straight to work with a monthly salary of 150,000. There will also be an end-of-year bonus. Full social benefits, including pension and health insurance, will be covered by the company. Furthermore, Brilliant Group will cover any medical expenses stemming from work-related injuries,” Ning Xi announced, smiling, fully expecting this to stir excitement among the applicants.
Sure enough, as her words echoed in the room, a buzz spread through the crowd, their previously indifferent gazes now ablaze with eagerness.
The average monthly wage was only around 5,000 in Jinghai City. Even for security roles, considered high-risk jobs, the monthly salary would typically reach only about 20,000 to 30,000.
Brilliant Group, however, was offering a substantial monthly salary of 150,000. It reflected the group’s reputation as a major player in Xia country. Yet, when Ning Xi glanced over at Lin Xiao, she noted his calm demeanor, as if the astronomical salary meant nothing to him.
Lin Xiao was indeed indifferent to this high wage. If not for the need to maintain his secret identity and protect Yuan Yong’s family, he, as the former captain of the Dragon Sword Squad, could easily command an annual salary in the millions at any major conglomerate.
Ning Xi didn’t have time to ponder this further. Perhaps due to the allure of a high salary, the crowd’s enthusiasm surged, prompting another query.
“Assistant Ning, how will the interview for this recruitment be conducted, and how many will you hire?”
“The company plans to recruit only one person this time. As for how the interview will proceed, I’ll announce that shortly.”
“Just one person?”
Ning Xi’s statement poured cold water over the crowd’s fervor; their ardor chilled as they were brought abruptly back to reality.
Among the over twenty applicants in the conference room, only one would be chosen. It seemed this high salary wouldn’t come easy.
Confronted with such stiff competition, no one was sure they could emerge victorious.
Except, perhaps, for Lin Xiao.
Upon entering the conference room, he had been silently scrutinizing everyone present. He had a comprehensive understanding of the situation and the strengths of all applicants.
While those who came for the interview generally had commendable capabilities, they were ordinary in Lin Xiao’s view. Only a few formidable candidates had caught his extra attention. But even they only warranted a second glance.
No one in the room posed any threat to him. As the captain of the Dragon Sword Squad and the infamous Night Emperor in the underworld, Lin Xiao held unshakable confidence in himself.
