Chapter 140: I Am the Law
by tinytreeUpon seeing Lin Xiao actually dare to make a move, Zhao Cheng’s face turned ashen. Fuming with rage, he bellowed, “Who gave you the audacity to do this?”
Blinded by his fury, he swiftly drew his handgun, pointing its dark muzzle directly at Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao stared at the gun aimed at him, a fleeting glint of lethal intent crossing his eyes. Although he wasn’t intimidated by firearms. He could, in fact, disarm Zhao Cheng in a heartbeat, but it was still unsettling to have a gun pointed at him.
Zhao Cheng felt chills run down his spine as he met Lin Xiao’s icy stare. It was as if a ferocious, prehistoric creature had set its eyes on him, invoking an involuntary sense of dread within him.
But he would never concede to feeling afraid, especially when he was the one holding a gun and Lin Xiao was unarmed. This internal conflict only served to further agitate him. His eyes reddened, and his face contorted as he spat out, “Well, aren’t you Mr. Tough Guy? Come on, if you’re so brave, make your move.”
Lin Xiao locked eyes with the increasingly unhinged Zhao Cheng, responding in a chilling tone, “Is this how you honor your police uniform? Is this your idea of upholding the law?”
Zhao Cheng burst into scornful laughter. “What does a mere bodyguard like you have to do with whether or not I’m upholding the law? I’ll have you know, in this police station, my word is law.”
Just then, an icy, crystal-clear voice echoed from the doorway of the interrogation room.
“Is that so? You are the law?” Su Mengjia stood at the entrance, her face a portrait of cold disdain.

Ten minutes earlier, in a conference room at the Jinghai City Police headquarters, about a dozen officers were engaged in a meeting.
Su Mengjia, sitting at the head of the table, spoke with evident exhaustion, “That will be all for today. You’re dismissed.”
Ever since she was ambushed by members of the Hundred Seat Society a few days ago, the entire city’s police force had been on high alert, forming a special investigative unit as a result.
Despite the recommendation from her superiors to rest, Su Mengjia chose to personally lead the task force in the hunt for incriminating evidence against the Hundred Seat Society. Although the group dominated the underworld in Jiangnan Province, they operated in a manner that left few traces behind.
As for the assailants who had attacked her, they remained tight-lipped during the extended interrogations, choosing to shoulder all the blame themselves.
So, even with the knowledge that the Hundred Seat Society was behind the ambush, the investigation had come to a standstill.
Today, Su Mengjia fortuitously learned that members of the Hundred Seat Society had recently appeared in the central district. In response, she led her special task force to the district’s police station to seek evidence against them.
However, the search left her utterly disappointed.
After days of relentless, high-stakes investigation, Su Mengjia was drained. She semi-reclined in her office chair, eyes closed, in an attempt to gather her energy.
At that moment, her thoughts drifted to Lin Xiao, a man she had once wrongly assumed to be a member of the Hundred Seat Society but who later came to her rescue. Compelled by the thought, she pulled out her phone and unlocked it, staring at Lin Xiao’s saved contact number. After a moment of contemplation, she chose not to call him.
“I’ll wait for the right time. After I’ve successfully brought the Hundred Seat Society to justice. Then, I’ll apologize and thank him,” she said to herself.
After a brief respite, Su Mengjia rose from her chair, gathered her belongings, and prepared to exit the central district station.
As she stepped out of her office, she drew a light breath and headed toward the parking lot. Due to her ongoing investigation, she frequently visited the station to review files and was therefore well-acquainted with the surroundings.
As she neared the parking lot, a conversation captured her attention.
“It’s absolutely infuriating to see innocent people being falsely accused,” grumbled a young policeman in his twenties to another officer, who appeared to be in his thirties.
Had Lin Xiao been present, he would have recognized the younger policeman as the one who had previously escorted him into the interrogation room and had shown him some semblance of compassion.
“We’re in a bind. Nobody wants to perpetuate injustice, but we’re powerless. Rumor has it that the influential young man whom Zhao Cheng is trying to cozy up to is not someone we can afford to offend,” the older policeman sighed in resignation.
“I get it, but it’s just so hard to swallow!”
“You can be as upset as you want, but it won’t change things. I saw two of the station’s most notorious interrogators go in there. I bet Lin Xiao has already been coerced into confessing by now.”
Just as they were engrossed in their lament, Su Mengjia appeared abruptly from behind them, her voice icy cold. “What exactly is happening here?”
“Su… Captain Su.”
The young policeman jumped at the sudden voice from behind. Preparing to react with indignation, he turned only to find that it was his idol and dream woman, Su Mengjia, who had interrupted. He stammered in response, immediately defusing his anger.
“What were you two just talking about?” Su Mengjia asked, her tone icy as she ignored the young police officer’s expression.
She had sensed an inkling of a miscarriage of justice from the earlier conversation.
Su Mengjia was someone who had a natural aversion to evil. With her privileged background, she could have chosen any career, yet she opted to become a police officer.
The young police officer was already discontented with the situation but felt powerless to intervene. However, seeing his idol and dream woman ask about it, he hastily offered up all the information he knew.
Upon hearing the young officer’s account, Su Mengjia’s face tightened into a slight frown. At first, she thought she’d misheard the name Lin Xiao, but the young officer’s details confirmed that she had not. Even more disturbing, this Lin Xiao seemed eerily similar to a Lin Xiao she knew.
Her expression grew graver. “Where is Lin Xiao right now?” she asked.
“In the interrogation room,” the young officer promptly replied.
With this knowledge, Su Mengjia stormed toward the interrogation room, her heart ablaze with anger.
As she approached the entrance, she heard Zhao Chen’s audacious and reckless voice, “Haha, whether I’m right or wrong, what does it matter to you, a mere bodyguard? Let me tell you, in this police station, my word is the law.”
Even Su Mengjia, who had dealt with innumerable criminals over the years, felt her anger boil over. She delivered a powerful kick to the door, her facial expression turning even darker and more fearsome.
“Oh, really? You’re the law?”
Right now, Su Mengjia was incensed. While she understood that every large organization had its share of bad apples, she had never before seen a police officer point a gun at an ordinary citizen while brazenly claiming to be above the law.
Worse still, the victim of this rogue officer’s intimidation was someone she not only knew but who had even saved her life. Despite reminding herself to maintain composure and professionalism, she couldn’t help but shout.
“Who the hell do you think you ar– Su… Captain Su?”
Zhao Cheng, his rationality long gone, had heard the door being kicked open and immediately turned to spew invectives. However, his words caught in his throat midway when he realized that the person who had kicked open the door was none other than Su Mengjia, the famed policewoman of Jinghai City with a formidable background. His face drained of color as fear set in.
