Chapter 503: The Night Owl Pays a Visit, With No Good Intentions
by tinytreeLin Xiao picked up the phone resting on the front passenger seat and had just pressed the answer button when a loud, brash voice came through the other end.
“Hey, Lin Xiao, what are you doing? You haven’t called your goddess in days. Did you already forget about me?”
There was only one person who would dare call herself a goddess. She was none other than the illustrious Miss Li Yunxi.
Her tone, as always, was bold and brassy, full of streetwise flair. Just hearing her voice conjured up the image of a domineering big sister figure.
“Didn’t we just talk on the phone two days ago? Even if I wanted to forget you, it’d be impossible.”
Lin Xiao walked to the pond by the courtyard, holding his phone in one hand while using the other to scoop water and wash his face.
“I just dropped my little sister off at school. What’s with the night owl call? Something up?”
“Because I’m going out for a feast, and halfway there, I suddenly thought of you, my good buddy. So I figured I’d invite you along. How’s that for loyalty?”
Li Yunxi seemed to be driving. Even through the phone, Lin Xiao could hear the engine roaring powerfully.
“Let me warn you first. Don’t you dare say no, or else suffer the consequences.”
“If you put it like that, then I’m even less inclined to go. Besides, what would happen if I did refuse? You gonna eat me or something?”
“Hmph! Try me! We’ve known each other so long, but you’ve never experienced your goddess’s true methods of revenge.” Li Yunxi raised her voice. “Besides, what reason do you have to refuse? I’m taking you out to eat and drink well. What’s not to like?”
“If it were just eating and drinking, I’d have no objection. But something tells me this is another one of your late-night ambushes. No one visits empty-handed at this hour,” Lin Xiao said flatly. “Every time you show up, it’s never for anything good.”
“Who says it’s not?” Li Yunxi huffed indignantly. “Let’s not even talk about the rest, just the last time, when I took you to that hot spring. I even brought a few girlfriends in bikinis for you to ogle. All of them are rich and beautiful. You telling me that wasn’t a good thing?”
“…”
Lin Xiao was left speechless.
From a certain angle, that was a good thing—a very good thing. Most men could only dream of such treatment.
“Anyway, whether you’re busy or not, whether you’re willing or not, you’re coming with me tonight.” Li Yunxi’s tone turned overbearing and rapid. “I’m almost at Maple Leaf Street. See you at the usual spot. Bye!”
She hung up just like that, without giving Lin Xiao a chance to respond.
“Hey, I’m not even at Maple Leaf Street right now—”
Beep! Beep…
Hearing the call disconnect, Lin Xiao could only shake his head in silence.
“Seriously…”
But that was just like Li Yunxi. If you wanted to say it nicely, she was straightforward and decisive; harshly, she was simply reckless.
If Li Yunxi ever suddenly turned gentle and ladylike, Lin Xiao would probably wonder if the sun had risen in the west.
He tried to call her back, but she didn’t answer. She didn’t want to give him any opportunity to refuse. He didn’t dwell on it and quickly drove to Maple Leaf Street. Since Li Yunxi’s car wasn’t there yet, he parked at the roadside and got out to buy a bottle of water.
Just then, a burgundy Ferrari sped up from a distance and screeched to a stop beside him, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Lin Xiao’s body flickered like a phantom, sliding several meters to the side to avoid being enveloped in dust.
The car door flew open, and a tall, shapely figure leapt out. In three quick strides, she charged toward Lin Xiao—and without a word, launched a kick at his head.
Lin Xiao hadn’t expected the young miss to come at him swinging. Without so much as a hello, she was already attacking. Speechless, he casually extended his arm and caught her slim ankle midair.
She was wearing high heels. With one leg caught, she immediately lost her balance and staggered. Thankfully, Lin Xiao reached out to steady her before she fell.
“You ungrateful jerk! Let go of your goddess!”
Half-collapsing into Lin Xiao’s arms, Li Yunxi bit her lip and growled.
“I treat you so well, and yet you call me a night owl with bad intentions? I have to teach you a lesson today.”
“No need to be so dramatic, is there?”
Not wanting to embarrass her, Lin Xiao straightened her up and released his grip, taking a step back.
“All because of you! I was in a great mood until you ruined it!”
Li Yunxi’s anger hadn’t subsided. Her dark, expressive eyes glared at him as though she wanted to take a bite out of his face.
“What do you take me for? A troublemaker who always pesters you? I just asked you to come out for dinner. Good food, good drink, and you made such a fuss!”
“What are you talking about? When did I ever say you were pestering me?” Lin Xiao was caught between laughter and exasperation. He could tell she misunderstood, and he softened his tone. “Look, I’m here, aren’t I?”
“Exactly. That’s why your goddess is still willing to talk to you. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even bother.”
Li Yunxi stepped closer, standing face to face with Lin Xiao, hands on her waist.
“Lin Xiao, be honest. Do you or do you not want to have dinner with me?”
“I do. Of course, I do.” Lin Xiao replied without hesitation. “If I didn’t, would I have come?”
Though his EQ wasn’t sky-high, he wasn’t an idiot either. After knowing Li Yunxi for so long, he knew exactly how to coax her. This little move worked like a charm.
Her angry expression vanished and was replaced by a beaming smile. That was just how she was—quick to anger, quick to cheer up.
She jabbed her elbow lightly into Lin Xiao’s chest. “I knew it. We’re bros, right? Share fortune and hardship, yeah?”
Lin Xiao nodded.
Li Yunxi twirled in front of him. “How’s my outfit today?”
“Looks great,” Lin Xiao said with a twitch of his lips. He felt she was starting to stray too far from the point, so he forcibly dragged the conversation back. “Since we’re going out to eat, shouldn’t you at least tell me what this is about?”
“Nothing big. Just a rich kids’ get-together. The place has great food.”
Li Yunxi rolled her eyes at him.
“I wouldn’t even go if it weren’t for you. But you… You thank kindness with suspicion and call me a night owl. Hmph!”
As she talked, her temper started to rise again.
“Let’s head out, then. I’m starving.” Lin Xiao quickly changed the subject.
“You’re driving.” Li Yunxi shoved the car keys into his hand and opened the passenger door. “I’ll fill you in on the details on the way.”
“Alright.”
Lin Xiao didn’t waste any time. Taking the keys, he prepared to get in the Ferrari and head off.
But just then, something tugged at his senses, and he suddenly looked toward the far end of Maple Leaf Street.
