Chapter 138: Twisting Truth and Falsehood
by tinytreeA few police officers escorted Lin Xiao into the interrogation room, where he was handcuffed to the chair. The officers then left without uttering a word, but their departing glances toward Lin Xiao were tinged with sympathy.
Lin Xiao furrowed his brow slightly, but he wasn’t alarmed. Instead, he began to meticulously survey his environment.
The interrogation room was rather plain. a locked metal cabinet, a broad desk equipped with paper and pen, and a large incandescent light on the left side. The only other item in the room was the interrogation chair he was seated in, placed three meters opposite the desk.
Just then, two policemen, one portly and the other lean, entered the room after pushing the door open.
Upon seeing Lin Xiao’s composure, they hesitated for a moment, surprised by his utter lack of panic. They were uncertain whether to consider him foolish or simply naive.
They were already briefed on the situation by their superior, Zhao Cheng. They knew Lin Xiao had offended a privileged second-generation rich kid with significant influence.
Zhao Cheng had specifically requested their involvement to ensure the issue was resolved smoothly. These two were known as adept interrogators within the bureau. Whether they dealt with murderers or fraudsters, none could resist confessing within an hour under their scrutiny. Their indifference to questions of justice or injustice had made them invaluable assets to Zhao Cheng.
“Name?”
Though taken aback initially, they promptly recalibrated their approach and asked.
Zhao Cheng had divulged a bit about Le Fangyun’s identity to incentivize them, knowing that their career prospects relied on handling this well.
“Lin Xiao.”
“Age?”
“Twenty-two.”
“Occupation?”
“Bodyguard.”
Lin Xiao’s willingness to cooperate clearly pleased them, making them believe that this case would be effortlessly resolved.
“Excellent, since you’re so cooperative, there’s little else to say. You’re suspected of engaging in a fight and causing bodily harm, but these aren’t grave offenses. Here’s a confession form, just sign your name on it. A few days in the precinct should clear all this up.”
The lean officer spoke, wearing a smile and an air of impartiality, as he produced a confession form for Lin Xiao to sign.
The crime listed on the confession form was indeed minor, just as the two men claimed. A simple street fight would lead to only a few days of detention at most.
However, if Lin Xiao were to naively trust them and sign the document, then the charges on the form would likely escalate, turning into a grievous crime that could warrant at least a decade in prison.
This was the objective their superior, Zhao Cheng, had set for them.
They were seasoned practitioners of this scheme, having deployed it multiple times before.
To their disappointment, Lin Xiao didn’t accept the confession form from the thin man. Instead, he responded with a chilly laugh, “Oh, really? But you two seem to know nothing about the situation. How can you ask me to confess?”
Although Lin Xiao wasn’t privy to their scheme, he could sense something amiss. With his keen intuition, he suspected that these men were likely sent by Le Fangyun and that there might be a trap involved.
Hearing Lin Xiao’s words, the thin man’s smile vanished instantly. His facial expression changed dramatically as he growled ominously, “Who’s running the investigation here, you or me? Listen, the evidence against you is solid. I advise you to sign right now, or don’t blame me if your punishment gets more severe.”
Lin Xiao merely looked at the two coldly, saying nothing.
Seeing Lin Xiao’s expression, the duo realized that their usual tactic was failing. They dropped any pretense and openly threatened him, saying, “Kid, do you know who you’ve offended? That’s Young Master Le. You’re just a lowly bodyguard. You’d better sign if you know what’s good for you. Otherwise, don’t blame us for being uncivil.”
“You’re twisting the facts,” Lin Xiao said.
“Twisting the facts?” The two burst out laughing. “You’re naive. The moment you set foot in this interrogation room, you become a criminal. You’ve no one to blame but yourself for foolishly offending Young Master Le.”
The heavier man then took out what looked like an electric baton, flicked it on, and it buzzed menacingly.
“You know what this is, kid? A specially designed electric baton. It’s not like those standard self-defense gadgets you find in stores. One zap from this, and you’ll be disoriented, even losing control of your bladder and bowels. And it won’t leave a trace. Many have cracked under less than five minutes with this. I hope you can be more resilient. Maybe you’ll even set a new record here, hahaha.”
As he spoke, the fat man couldn’t help but break into a triumphant laugh.
Staring at the mad glint in the fat man’s eyes, Lin Xiao’s gaze turned icy. “Is this your standard method of interrogation?”
“Ha, absolutely,” the fat man sneered. “You’re likely unaware of our notorious reputation in the police station. Let me clarify. This is merely the opening act. Sign the confession now if you know what’s good for you. Otherwise, you’re in for some real pain.”
At that moment, the skinny man beside him chimed in impatiently, “Why are we wasting time talking to this brat? Young Master Le is still waiting in his office. Hurry up. If he’s this stubborn, let him get a taste of an electric shock.”
“I’ll ask you one final time. Will you sign the confession or not?”
Lin Xiao remained silent, locking eyes with the fat man in a frigid stare.
“Fine, fine. I’ve heard from Captain Zhao that you’re a skilled fighter. But with your hands cuffed, how do you plan to resist? If you’re so defiant, let’s see how you enjoy the sensation of an electric shock.”
Without another word, the fat man activated his military-grade electric baton. Wearing a menacing expression, he advanced deliberately toward Lin Xiao, raised the baton, and swung it down with full force.
Lin Xiao watched the descending baton, his face a mask of utter calm. Not a flicker of fear. Just as the baton was about to make contact, he suddenly moved.
With a slight upward gesture, he shattered the handcuffs that had bound him to the interrogation chair as if they were mere plastic. At the same time, he lunged at the fat man’s arm. Before his adversary could react, Lin Xiao had already seized the electric baton from his grip.
“So, you say this electric baton is that effective, is it? Time to find out,” Lin Xiao said, holding the sparking weapon, his face ice-cold, as he looked at the now stunned fat man.
It was only then that reality sank in for the fat man. Lin Xiao had broken free from the handcuffs and disarmed him. His prior arrogance evaporated as he stared at the blue electrical arcs dancing on the baton in Lin Xiao’s hand.
“You– what are you doing? I’m a police officer! Lay a finger on me, and you’ll be charged with assaulting an officer. That’s a serious offense!”
He knew all too well the kind of damage an electric baton could do. Some criminals had been reduced to drooling idiots due to excessive shocks.
Dishing out electric shocks might have been gratifying for him, but being on the receiving end was a completely different story. The fat man looked at the electric baton in sheer terror, petrified at the thought of being shocked into idiocy.
