Chapter 286: Four Captains Form a Detective Squad and Officially Enter the Mountain!
by tinytree“Alright, stay safe.”
The words Zhao Youcheng repeated the most were about being careful. He was getting older and couldn’t run around with the team anymore. All he could do now was strategize from the rear.
On Wu Yaoming’s side, the program inspectors who had followed him stood bent over, panting heavily. They had practically sprinted the entire way here. The jungle was rugged, constantly up and down, and at times, they had to tumble over obstacles. Just walking steadily was exhausting, let alone running through it.
“Mr. Zhao, don’t stay in the forest too long. Once the sun starts to set, come out. The forest is still dangerous at night,” Wu Yaoming reminded him.
Meanwhile, Ying Yuezi walked over, still holding an ice pack against her wrist, though she looked much better than she had in the morning.
“How’s it looking? Can we confirm that Wang Yun and the others are in the mountain?” Ying Yuezi asked.
Wu Mingyu, leaning on a cane and supporting his back, also stood up.
They hadn’t left yet and were still waiting at the edge of the forest. They couldn’t afford to miss any updates. After chasing Wang Yun across three cities, they had to catch him this time.
“Almost there. The water and climbing teams have found traces of them. According to the landing point provided by Captain Alfa, the nearest one is in Enclosed Mountains. We’ll head out there in half an hour.”
Wu Yaoming glanced up at the sky, relieved that in the tropics, nightfall came a bit later. It was only four o’clock, so they still had time. But it looked like they’d have to spend the night in Weishan.
“Since we’ve confirmed their location, why don’t we wait until tomorrow morning to set off?” Wu Mingyu suggested, frowning as he looked at the exhausted team members. “The guys are worn out, and none of you have really rested either.”
It was true. Everyone was drained.
Ever since they arrived in Yun City, they’d barely had a proper break. On the first day, they went straight into the jungle, and then the snake incident happened.
“That’s true, but we’re getting closer to Wang Yun. If we delay too long, there’s a risk something could go wrong,” Wu Yaoming said, clearly concerned.
“How about this, if you’re that worried, take a small team in for reconnaissance. Once you find any trace of them, notify the rest of us for backup,” Ying Yuezi suggested. “We don’t need to waste all our manpower and energy on one spot.”
“I agree. We’re from Russia. We’ve got plenty of stamina. We can go without sleep for three days. I’ll lead the team in,” Hardy chimed in confidently.
“I’ll go too. Captain Hardy and I can watch each other’s backs. You guys should take a break. Too many people could cause unnecessary chaos,” Werner added as he stood up.
Captain Marley from the U.S. also volunteered.
“Wang Yun’s tricks humiliated my couch. I want to be the one to catch him first,” he said, his face full of resentment.
Their Captain had just joined, only to be outwitted by Wang Yun. To make things worse, Wang Yun had even saved him during a critical moment, which made the whole situation even more humiliating.
Being saved by your enemy? For them, that was worse than death.
They had to regain their dignity.
Captain Alfa joined in as well. He was familiar with the geography of the area and could be of great help in the jungle.
“Alright, the four of us will go. Each of us will bring one inspector. Fewer people can move quickly and efficiently,” Hardy said.
“Captain Wu, you stay here. Your body isn’t as strong as ours. We grew up on goat’s milk and raw meat,” Werner joked with a smile, clearly trying to give Wu Yaoming a chance to rest.
Wu Yaoming’s calf was still injured, and after trudging through the jungle again, blood had started to seep through his clothes. Seeing the determination in the eyes of the other captains, Wu Yaoming thought for a moment before agreeing.
“Alright. If you spot anything, don’t act rashly, just observe quietly from a distance,” he instructed. “As long as Wang Yun is in that jungle, we’ll catch him this time.”
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Soon, the supply vehicle arrived.
The eight members of the team geared up, ensuring they had all the necessary equipment, and set off toward Weishan.
Before entering, they had consulted with the local villagers. The entire jungle within the Enclosed Mountains was filled with poisonous gas, making it impossible to expose any skin. They had to be fully suited up, covering themselves completely—down to the last strand of hair.
As a precaution, they also carried oxygen tanks.
This was the first time a mission was led by four captains with such a small team.
Hardy took the lead at the front.
The people of Russia were naturally fearless and tough. They had no fear of any living creature. Even newborns could walk around outside, bare-chested, in freezing temperatures. Courage and ferocity were in their blood. They were, as people often said, recklessly bold.
“The poisonous gas here is really thick,” someone remarked.
They had walked less than two kilometers when they found themselves surrounded by layers of gray fog.
The visibility around them grew hazy, as if they had entered a confined, isolated space. The light inside seemed to dim compared to the outside, dropping in intensity by three levels.
It was like comparing a 28-watt bulb to a 6-watt one. The difference between LED lights and incandescent bulbs.
