Chapter 323: Self-Rescue, the Last Chance!
by tinytreeThe helicopter began its return flight. Everyone in the program inspectors’ livestream was in an uproar.
“Why are they leaving? What about Wang Yun? Even if he’s a criminal, it’s just a role he’s playing!”
“This is heartless! Wang Yun is a real person, not just a character. Have you all gotten so absorbed in the show that you’ve lost touch with reality?”
“Everyone, calm down! You saw it too. If they don’t leave, they’ll all die. Returning means only Wang Yun is lost. It’s the logical choice!”
“Logical? Do you even have a shred of humanity? This is a living, breathing person! Wang Yun’s abilities are real. After the show, he could make tremendous contributions to any field!”
“So what? Just because he’s talented doesn’t mean everyone else should die with him!”
The chat was in chaos, split into two camps, each passionately arguing their case. There were many supporters of Wang Yun, but just as many believed Wu Yaoming made the right decision.
Given the circumstances, it was a choice anyone might have made.
“Director, what should we do…?”
In the studio, a female staff member couldn’t hold back her tears anymore and broke down. She turned helplessly to the director, her voice trembling with sobs.
The director lit a cigarette and took drag after drag, his expression grim.
Smoking was strictly forbidden in the studio. It was a long-standing rule. But in this moment, the director seemed utterly lost. He said nothing, and the staff didn’t press him further.
The female staff member couldn’t bring herself to look at the screen anymore. She was unwilling to witness Wang Yun’s situation.
Though the rescue team had been given Wang Yun’s coordinates, the Smoky Forest was a vast swampy plain with no distinct landmarks.
Even if they knew where Wang Yun was, how could Wu Yaoming find him?
Even if they could see Wang Yun’s perspective live, the surroundings were so uniform and open that distinguishing one spot from another was nearly impossible.
It was like being lost in a desert—telling rescuers where you were in such a featureless expanse was futile.
Unless they had a phone to share their exact location, finding him seemed hopeless.
Just as despair engulfed everyone and grief set in, Wang Yun’s perspective on the livestream suddenly changed.
“What is Wang Yun doing?!”
A staff member gasped loudly, prompting everyone to look up.
Even the director, who had been smoking in silence, raised his head to stare at Wang Yun’s video feed.
The screen showed Wang Yun standing amidst a network of fissures. The ground he stood on had fewer cracks, forming the largest intact patch of land in the area.
Though disheveled, Wang Yun stood resolutely. He had a rope in his hand.
At the end of the rope was a large stone, roughly ten kilograms—heavy enough to be difficult for most people to lift, yet Wang Yun swung it effortlessly.
“Just one shot. One chance.”
Wang Yun muttered under his breath. Though the wind howled and the waves roared, the viewers in his livestream heard him.
“What is he doing? Why is he swinging that rope?”
“That’s a climbing rope! Don’t tell me he’s planning to throw it at the helicopter!”
“Impossible! That helicopter’s at least twenty or thirty meters high. How could he throw it that far? And even if he did, hitting the helicopter would be near impossible in this wind!”
The livestream audience was stunned. Many stood up, gripping their phones tightly as if they were right there with him.
One shot. Just one.
Wang Yun’s gaze locked onto the helicopter above him.
Because of the wind and air currents, the helicopter was moving slowly. But that slowness gave him just enough time.
“It’s now or never!”
With a loud shout, Wang Yun hurled the rope into the air.
It flew with precision, as though guided by an unseen force, straight toward the helicopter.
“There he is! I see Wang Yun! He’s throwing something!”
Inside the helicopter, a program inspector turned his head and spotted Wang Yun below.
“Where? Where is he?” Wu Yaoming shouted, rushing to the window.
Sure enough, he saw Wang Yun.
Just as Wu Yaoming leaned out to get a better look, the heavy stone tied to the rope smashed into the helicopter with a deafening bang. The impact caused the helicopter to lurch violently. Wu Yaoming, thrown off balance, fell back into the cabin.
“Captain Wu, Wang Yun’s gone mad! He’s attacking us!” a program inspector screamed in terror.
“He’s insane! Does he want to drag us down with him?!”
Another inspector stared in disbelief, his face pale.
