The call came from a hidden number.

When Wang Yun glanced at the screen and saw that string of digits, he paused for a moment.

But then it clicked. There was only one person it could be—him.

The call connected, and an aged voice came through the receiver.

“Hello, Wang Yun. My surname is Min.”

The voice sounded like it belonged to a man in his late fifties or early sixties. It was seasoned, weathered, but still commanding. He opened with just his surname, yet the tone alone carried a quiet pressure, a weight of authority.

    Min?

The moment Wang Yun heard it, he tapped a few quick keys on his keyboard and put the call on speaker.

    “It’s me,” he replied.

    That was all he said.

    No follow-up questions. No flattery.

If this person had reached out to him not once, not twice, but three separate times, and still left no trace Wang Yun could find, then he was clearly someone powerful.

And someone like that seeking him out… obviously wanted something.

“You don’t need to look into me. You won’t find anything anyway,” the voice said, direct and unapologetic. “I want to meet you. I admire your talent. I want you to work for me.”

Blunt as it was, his tone still carried an air of arrogance, as if Wang Yun should feel honored just to receive the call.

Like he was doing Wang Yun a favor.

“And then what?” Wang Yun asked with a soft laugh, eyes still on the search results on his screen.

Min Zhengguo. Head of the Wenchang General District. The man at the very top.

No wonder Wang Yun couldn’t dig up anything.

The name Min was rare to begin with, which made it easier to trace once he had it.

But this title had serious power. Even the mayor of Magic City would need special approval just to meet the man.

    “And then what?” he repeated.

Min Zhengguo clearly hadn’t expected such a dismissive response.

After all, this was the third time he’d reached out.

The first was back in Mao Xiao Gang’s village, when Wang Yun faced off against Mao Yan and his father. One of Min’s men, dressed in a special uniform, had arrived to take the two away and left Wang Yun with a parting line: “We may meet again soon.”

The second time, a man had shown up at Wang Yun’s home to invite him directly, but Wang Yun had refused.

And now, for the third time, Min Zhengguo was calling him personally.

Far away in the north, inside a tastefully furnished, scholarly office, a middle-aged man in a charcoal Zhongshan suit frowned slightly as he stared at the landline in front of him. His eyes were filled with disbelief.

On the screen, Wang Yun’s phone number glowed back at him.

“‘And then’? Hah. Young man, there’s no need to posture with me,” Min said, trying to regain control of the conversation. “With your level of intelligence, I’m sure you already know who I am.”

His voice carried the faintest edge of irritation.

Min hadn’t reached out again and again just to be brushed off, he genuinely saw value in Wang Yun’s ability.

Hadn’t Liu Bei humbled himself with three visits to secure Zhuge Liang?

And now here he was, the head of the Northern Command, having to make the calls himself to a guy barely in his twenties?

And the kid still had the gall to act like he didn’t care?

If it weren’t for the fact that Min had personally watched Wang Yun’s livestreams and vetted his background in detail, he might’ve thought this little punk wasn’t worth the effort. Might’ve started doubting his own judgment.

Min had expected that, after being put in his place, the boy would show some humility.

After all, it should’ve been a great honor to receive a call from someone like him; most people would be burning incense in their ancestral halls over it.

“I know who you are,” Wang Yun replied coolly. “Min Zhengguo, head of the Wenchang General District. So what do you want with me? And let’s be clear; I didn’t parade in front of you. Your people came to me. Twice. You know exactly where I stand, and yet you still called. That means you need something from me. Or, to put it more nicely, maybe you just recognize talent and want to recruit me. Either way, that means you’re the one in the passive position here, not me. So maybe it’s time you adjusted your tone?”

As the words landed, Min Zhengguo’s hand—clutching the receiver—tensed.

    His narrowed eyes slowly widened.

Over twenty years in power, and never once had anyone spoken to him like this. Let alone some twenty-something kid.

    He was speechless.

On the other end, Wang Yun let out a light chuckle.

“Apologies if I come off a bit arrogant. It’s just, I don’t know you. You want to meet up for tea or whatever, right? Since you’re so eager, fine, I’ll give you the chance. Text me the time and place. But not tonight. I’m spending the evening with my girlfriend.”

Wang Yun had clearly struck a nerve, but he didn’t push further.

He didn’t want to make an enemy out of the guy, but he also wasn’t going to let himself be talked down to.

Just needed to make that clear.

And with that, he’d even given Min an out. A way to save face.

Min Zhengguo nearly spat out a mouthful of blood from sheer frustration.

What kind of attitude is this?!

    Bang!

He slammed the receiver down hard.

The man standing across from him flinched. His face went pale. He was the same subordinate who had once gone to Wang Yun’s house to deliver the invitation.

Meanwhile, Wang Yun heard the dial tone on his end and smirked.

“That temper of his… tsk. It’s gonna get him in trouble someday.”
