Chapter 491: Are You Just Bad Losers?!
by tinytreeWang Yun had absolutely no interest in learning more about Old Zhou.
The second person stepped forward. He was a tall, skinny young man. And by skinny, he looked like a human telephone pole. As for his height, he was easily over 1.9 meters.
That kind of stature was a major disadvantage in a survival game. Even trying to blend in or hide would be a nightmare.
“You can call me Xiao Gao. I’ve got super long legs, and, uh… I can see farther from up high. And, uh… well…”
He trailed off, visibly embarrassed. But after hesitating, he finished his thought.
“My only real drawback is that I eat a lot. But don’t worry, big brother, I’ll do my best to eat less during the show.”
Xiao Gao scratched his head with a sheepish grin.
Wang Yun showed no expression in response.
Xiao Gang and Old Hu, on the other hand, could hardly contain themselves. What kind of lineup was this? Long legs were… a skill now?
“Big brother, just call me Big Mouth,” said the third man. “I’m a damn good cook. Give me a pile of roadside weeds, and I’ll turn them into gourmet cuisine!”
His nickname was clearly well-earned; his mouth was enormous. He had a bulky frame, though not excessively overweight. Still, he panted a bit as he spoke.
One look, and it was obvious he was a chef.
“Oh come on,” Old Hu muttered under his breath, “This isn’t a cooking show.”
The fourth person was the one they’d earlier joked was child labor.
Sure enough, when he opened his mouth, his voice was so soft and childlike that no one was surprised anymore.
“Hello, Brother Wang Yun! My name is Xiang Xiang. I’m not good at much… but I’m on the school track team, and I’ve been the sprinting champion every year. I really like running! So I joined this show to run with you, Brother Wang Yun!”
From the looks of him, Xiang Xiang couldn’t be more than twelve or thirteen years old. His voice was still unbroken, and his thinking was adorably innocent.
He wants to come on this show just to run alongside Wang Yun?
Honestly, the program team had a real imagination.
Wang Yun couldn’t help but laugh when he heard that. This time, it was genuine.
That laugh made Director Zhou wish he could sink into the floor. Every one of these teammates had been handpicked by the showrunners, specifically to make things difficult for Wang Yun.
Wang Yun turned to the last person.
Just as he waited for the guy to introduce himself, Director Zhou stepped in.
“Uh… I’ll do this one. He’s a bit shy. His name is Xu Shisan; you can call him Thirteen. It’s his favorite number. His specialty is being quiet.”
“What?! Quiet?!” Old Hu exploded.
The shout made Thirteen jump in fright, shrinking back like a startled little bird. His gaze, full of confusion and fear, somehow made people want to protect him.
“Quiet?! That’s a specialty? Director Zhou, are you serious?! You can’t insult my boss like this!”
Old Hu couldn’t hold it back anymore.
The first few people, sure—they were odd, but at least they were functioning adults. But this Thirteen guy looked like he’d fold if the wind blew too hard. No skills. No presence.
Just quiet.
What was the point of even bringing him?
If quiet was all he had to offer, wouldn’t it be even quieter if he just stayed home?
Old Hu felt his blood pressure spike. He didn’t even know what to say anymore.
Director Zhou, meanwhile, looked like he was about to cry. His face turned red.
“Whew…”
Even Wang Yun had reached his limit. He let out a long breath and turned to Thirteen.
“Director Zhou, is he autistic?” Wang Yun asked calmly, forcing himself to stay composed.
Director Zhou’s eyes widened slightly. Then, after a pause, he nodded slowly.
“…Yes.”
“Damn it.”
This time, it was Xiao Gang who cursed out loud. He turned away and rubbed his forehead, unable to look.
Wang Yun raised a hand to say something, but the words caught in his throat. The room fell into silence. Even the other four misfit teammates looked away, clearly uncomfortable. They knew they were being used to trip Wang Yun up.
Sure, they were fans—this was their chance to meet him in person—but deep down, they couldn’t shake the guilt. They were nothing more than obstacles on his path.
“I’m sorry—”
“When does the program start?”
Director Zhou had just opened his mouth to apologize when Wang Yun cut him off, voice low and steady.
This was a real challenge. But also an opportunity for shock value.
Wang Yun adjusted his mindset in mere seconds.
‘If I can’t refuse it, I’ll take it head-on.’
“As soon as you leave the airport, you’ll have a 30-minute grace period,” Director Zhou explained. “After that, the program inspectors will begin pursuit. Not only must you escape on your own, but you’re responsible for the safety of your entire team. If all seven of your teammates get caught, you’ll be fitted with a tracking device as punishment.”
Zhou forced the words out.
“A locator?”
Wang Yun let out another laugh.
“Oh, that’s rich. Your program team really can’t take a loss, huh? Is this your idea of fair play?!” Xiao Gang stepped in angrily, glaring at Zhou.
He knew Director Zhou was in a tough spot, but this move was as good as handing Wang Yun’s location to every inspector on the island.
What kind of escape show was this supposed to be?
“Enough.” Wang Yun’s voice turned firm. “From now on, listen to my command. Let’s move.”
