Chapter 465: So It Was You… You Saved My Granddaughter!
by tinytreeJust as he was about to stand up, Min Xiaoya suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Grandpa!” she called out urgently.
“Hm?”
Min Xiaoya stood, face flushed, her hands nervously wringing in front of her chest.
“Grandpa, he’s the one who saved me.”
“Him?!”
Before her words even finished, Xiao Fu blurted out in surprise. Then, as he looked at Wang Yun—his damp hair, the borrowed ill-fitting clothes—realization hit him instantly.
“Well, well. What are you doing here?”
Wang Yun’s smile faded. He stared at Min Xiaoya, expressionless. Even though he already knew who she was, there was still a part to play.
Min Xiaoya stiffened even more under his gaze.
Before coming here, her grandfather had mentioned that they’d be meeting the lead contestant from that escape-themed program. That’s why she’d insisted on tagging along, saying she wanted to see the excitement for herself.
Of course, they all knew what Wang Yun looked like, but none of them had expected it to be him.
And even more unexpected, he was really handsome.
“So it was you who saved my granddaughter,” Min Zhengguo said, his eyes narrowing as he glanced at his granddaughter’s increasingly flushed cheeks.
Having lived a long life, he knew exactly what she was thinking. What’s more, Wang Yun was indeed far more striking than he’d imagined.
That bearing. That presence.
It had exceeded all his expectations.
“Your granddaughter? Huh. What a coincidence. Oh, so you’re leaving now? Great. I’m not exactly comfortable in this outfit either, guess I’ll be going too.”
Wang Yun sneered and turned to leave.
Bang!
Xiao Fu reacted quickly and shut the door before he could exit.
Wang Yun turned, his gaze cold as he glared at him.
“What’s this? You say I should leave, and now I’m not allowed to?”
His voice was laced with sarcasm, eyes sharp as blades.
For some reason, Wang Yun had taken a dislike to Min Zhengguo from the very start. Maybe it had something to do with the time they tried to invite him at his home with a rude tone and a bossy attitude.
And now, here they were again, same arrogance.
This old man carried way too much self-importance.
“My apologies, Mr. Wang,” Xiao Fu said immediately, bowing his head without a hint of hesitation, not even sparing a thought for his own position.
The sudden apology caught Wang Yun a little off guard.
“And me too, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were Grandpa’s guest. And at the pond earlier, I didn’t realize you weren’t allowed to feed the fish there. And thank you… for saving me. I really am sorry.”
Min Xiaoya quickly stepped forward, sensing how things were spiraling.
Once again, it had all started because of her.
She stopped right in front of Wang Yun and bowed her head in apology.
Watching his granddaughter acting so meekly made Min Zhengguo’s blood pressure spike, but he couldn’t say a word.
No matter how he looked at it, the blame did fall on her.
Wang Yun turned to look at Min Xiaoya.
Her reddened eyes and guilty expression softened his gaze. She’d already given him an out, there was no need to escalate things further.
“It’s fine. Luckily, it was me who fell in. If it’d been a girl, it would’ve been far more embarrassing. But I really didn’t know… you were this old man’s granddaughter.”
Old man.
The moment those two words left Wang Yun’s mouth, Min Zhengguo’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Xiao Fu’s face twitched in horror.
But Min Xiaoya?
She let out a snort of laughter.
“Haha, since you’ve accepted my apology, then please, have a seat.”
She extended a hand toward the table in invitation.
Wang Yun nodded and sat down without hesitation, right across from the so-called “old man.”
Said “old man” was so angry his beard nearly curled. Yet, he didn’t say a word. In fact, he didn’t seem all that bothered by the title. Perhaps because so few dared speak to him so casually. Maybe this abrupt encounter wasn’t such a bad thing.
“So, old man, let’s get straight to it. Why’d you bring me here? Let me be clear, I’m not interested in any kind of office job, and I don’t have lofty ambitions. I just want to make some money, live my life, and coast along. I came here today to tell you that face to face. No need for you to waste your energy chasing me down again and again.”
Wang Yun laid it all out, straight and blunt.
That was exactly how he felt.
And during his research on Min Zhengguo earlier today, he had come across another name that caught his eye—
Fang Jianguo.
Old Zhou had mentioned him before.
The retired commander from the program’s inspection bureau, Old Fang.
From what Old Zhou had said, Old Fang had always spoken in Wang Yun’s defense. Back when Wang Yun got burned, the man had worried himself into a hospital stay. Even now, he was still recovering. Old Zhou said that once he was discharged, he planned to take Wang Yun to visit him.
Naturally, Wang Yun had agreed without hesitation.
One more thing—Old Fang and Min Zhengguo were comrades-in-arms from their military days.
The two had kept in close contact over the years.
So in a way, Wang Yun had only agreed to come today out of respect for Old Fang. Even though they had never met, someone who was hospitalized out of worry for him… That alone deserved some gratitude.
“Mr. Wang, you’re still young. Give it a couple more years, and you won’t be saying things like that anymore,” Xiao Fu said, pouring him a glass of water with practiced ease, his tone a mix of gentleness and persuasion.
He was Min Zhengguo’s assistant. Some things were better said by someone like him.
“At least, that’s how I see it now,” Wang Yun replied flatly. “If you’ve got other ideas in mind, best to drop them now.”
