Chapter 338: Back at the Mountain Peak, A Narrow Escape!
by tinytreeThe two of them turned around in unison. Their faces, still tense just a second ago, instantly relaxed the moment they saw Wang Yun.
“Boss, did you just fly here? That was way too fast!”
Without a second thought, Xiao Gang rushed up to Wang Yun.
When their boss had gone to divert the pursuers, the two of them had felt uneasy. Since when did their boss have to take on dangerous tasks for his subordinates? And not just any task—something this risky.
The entire way up, they had been anxious, constantly worrying.
What if their boss got caught? What if they lost contact with him?
With those thoughts lingering, they made their way up the mountain alongside the road.
Before Brother Hu had spoken just now, the two of them had been silent the whole way, weighed down by their concerns.
Not wanting things to be too awkward, and not wanting Xiao Gang to feel worse, Brother Hu had cracked a joke—saying his short legs made climbing difficult.
“It’s not that I’m fast, you’re just too slow. How long did it take you to get here? If an inspector had been tailing you, you’d have been caught ages ago,” Wang Yun teased.
Brother Hu and Xiao Gang exchanged grins.
“Boss, we were waiting for you. We didn’t want to go too far in case you couldn’t find us.”
“Right, right! That’s why you left such an impossible-to-spot clue?”
Wang Yun pointed at the twig he had thrown at their feet.
The two scratched their heads sheepishly.
“Hurry up and move. They’ll probably come looking for us here.”
After saying that, Wang Yun walked ahead.
Xiao Gang and Brother Hu felt a surge of energy, quickening their pace.
The mountain was steep, with occasional moss-covered rocks that made footing tricky and easy to slip on. Other than that, it wasn’t too bad.
In just two hours, the three of them reached the summit.
The view from the top was quite nice—looking out, they could see the distant ocean stretching endlessly.
“Hah… hopefully, those guys take their time getting here. Let me catch my breath first,” Brother Hu gasped, panting heavily.
He was older than both Xiao Gang and Wang Yun, so he was feeling the exhaustion much more. Not to mention, he was a bit on the heavier side.
“You should’ve started exercising and losing weight a long time ago.”
“I’ve already lost twenty pounds in the past few days! It’s just that I’m not getting enough nutrients!”
The two of them joked back and forth.
“Alright, enough chit-chat. The fact that we made it through this earthquake alive is already a blessing. It looks like we won’t be able to go back to Enclosed Mountain or the Smoky Forest. That island is off-limits for the time being,” Wang Yun said as he stood up and scanned his surroundings.
Cities all looked the same to him. But here in Yun City, the ocean completely surrounded them. Even the island they had previously visited was right in the middle of the sea.
Everything about this place had a unique, breathtaking beauty.
Originally, Wang Yun had planned to use this geographical advantage to set up a formation. He wanted to first toy with the program inspectors before launching a counterattack, dealing a heavy blow to the team leaders.
But who would’ve thought that, of all things, an earthquake would hit at just the wrong time?
It caught Wang Yun completely off guard.
Moreover, he had now decided to let Wu Yaoming and the others go.
The Dragon Nation’s Captains—he no longer planned to target them.
Haedy and Werner, he would also spare.
For now, the other countries’ Captains had become his primary targets.
“That’s right. Surviving a disaster means fortune will follow!”
Brother Hu somehow pulled out a pack of cigarettes, tore it open, and lit one up.
“You got that from the amusement park shop, didn’t you?”
Xiao Gang gave him a side glance, and Brother Hu shot him a glare.
“Correction! I didn’t steal it, I paid for it. A big bill, at that. I bought it fair and square. Boss, first one’s for you.”
Brother Hu grinned and handed one over.
Wang Yun suddenly remembered something he had taken. No—bought.
“These two pairs of shoes are for you. Check if they fit. If not, well… tough luck.”
As he spoke, Wang Yun untied two bags from his waist.
The two of them stared at the suddenly revealed shoes, looking surprised.
“I thought that was Boss’s gear bag. Turns out it’s just two pairs of shoes?” Xiao Gang exclaimed in shock.
Wang Yun nodded and pointed at his own feet.
“This is the latest high-tech model, and I bought it. You two try it on, I’ll teach you how to use it.”
The two of them hurriedly put on the shoes. Coincidentally, they fit perfectly.
“Holy crap! This… damn! Quick, help—whoa!”
Just as Brother Hu stood up, he accidentally leaned forward. In an instant, the six wheels under his shoes ejected. Caught off guard, he lost his balance and bam—face-first into the ground.
“These are roller shoes. Take it slow.”
Wang Yun held back his laughter and helped Brother Hu up. Xiao Gang, standing to the side, looked as if his eyes were about to pop out. They thought these were just regular sneakers. Who could’ve guessed they had hidden mechanisms?
And the six wheels could even retract.
This was some next-level smart tech.
“Boss! Don’t tell me you used these to catch up to us so fast?”
That fall must’ve knocked some sense into Brother Hu—he finally connected the dots.
Wang Yun chuckled. “What else? You think I’m some kind of god? Now, let me teach you how to use them. Lean forward, like you’re about to run. The six wheels under the shoes will automatically extend. Lean back, and the wheels retract.”
