    Chapter Index

Xiao Qiao ran alongside Wang Yun, her heart pounding.

They were almost out of the fire zone. But the more she ran, the more something felt off. His voice sounded so familiar, like she had heard it somewhere before.

Wang Yun didn’t have time to respond. He kept waving his branch through the air to clear his vision.

Thankfully, he could still see well enough.

With both of them in tow, he sprinted for less than ten minutes. And finally, they made it out.

Compared to where they had just been, this area was much better. But the wind was already pushing the smoke toward them.

Soon, this place would be swallowed up too.

“Follow this path down the mountain now,” Wang Yun ordered. “I’m going back for the others.”

His voice was hoarse, rough from all the smoke. But his tone was steady, full of determination.

Xiao Qiao and her boyfriend were still in shock.

Did they just escape? Just like that?

The whole way here, not a single burning branch had fallen on them. It seemed way too easy.

    “Thank you! Thank you, hero!”

    “You must be exhausted!”

Xiao Qiao was beyond grateful, wanting to say more. But before she could, Wang Yun had already turned around and sprinted back into the fire zone.

Watching his retreating figure, Xiao Qiao felt a rush of emotions she couldn’t put into words.

    Her boyfriend frowned slightly.

“Xiao Qiao, why was there only one person sent to save us? And that guy… he doesn’t look like a firefighter. Why does he seem so familiar?”

Xiao Qiao winced as she touched the burns on her head, sucking in a sharp breath.

“You’re right. This is strange. Shouldn’t there be more people coming? And it doesn’t seem like he’s here to put out the fire. It’s like he came just to rescue us.”

“Forget it. Let’s just get out of here. If we stay any longer, we’ll just be a burden to him.”

With that, the two of them hurried down the mountain.

Meanwhile, Wang Yun plunged back into the raging fire.

The viewers in the livestream were overwhelmed with emotions. A mix of admiration and fury. They admired Wang Yun’s courage, risking his life to save people again and again. But they were furious at those reckless, clueless young people.

“Big Brother’s voice is completely shot. He must’ve inhaled so much smoke!”

“Seriously! When have we ever seen Big Bro in such a miserable state? All because of those six idiots!”

“Why the hell were they even in the mountains during an earthquake?! They’re just making more work for the rescue teams!”

“I swear, if anything happens to Big Brother, I won’t let those six off the hook!”

But Wang Yun had no idea how much everyone was worrying about him. All he knew was that if he didn’t move fast, he wouldn’t last much longer.

For the first time, he felt his stamina slipping.

His head was spinning. His chest burned with pain. Breathing was getting harder.

And worst of all, his eyes stung so badly he could barely keep them open.

“Captain Li, how much longer? I found all six of them, I’ve already rescued two.”

This time, Wang Yun took the initiative to contact the team.

“Really?! Wang Yun, hang in there! We’ll reach you in about an hour.”

    An hour?

By the time they got here, the flowers would’ve bloomed and withered.

Wang Yun frowned but didn’t reply. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to keep running.

The viewers watching the stream were extremely sharp. They immediately noticed something was off about Wang Yun’s tone.

    His voice sounded weak.

That single detail sent everyone into a frenzy.

“Something’s wrong! His voice isn’t steady anymore!”

“Oh god, is he about to collapse?! He inhaled too much smoke!”

Even the executive producer was panicking behind the scenes. Of all people, he definitely didn’t want anything happening to Wang Yun.

Standing in front of the cameras, he was so anxious he could barely stay still.

    “Help! Somebody help us!”

The four people left behind were screaming their lungs out. Their entire bodies were bright red, scorched by the hot water.

Their voices were raw, hoarse from shouting. Their faces were filled with nothing but despair.

One of them held their arms up in the air. His hands were covered in painful blisters, too burned to lower them.

“W-We’re screwed! They definitely ran off! They’re never coming back for us!” The blonde girl completely broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

The short-haired girl didn’t cry, but her face was completely lifeless.

“What’s the point of talking about it now? We’re dead either way. If I do die, I’m haunting those two bastards for the rest of their lives!”

    “Those traitors!”

The short-haired girl suddenly snapped, her last two words coming out as a scream of rage. Her outburst sent the others into a further spiral of panic.

The blonde’s boyfriend refused to sit and wait for death. He gritted his teeth and reached for the rocks, trying to climb out.

The water temperature had risen again. They could feel it, almost forty-eight degrees Celsius now.

At that temperature, their feet felt like they were being stabbed with needles. They couldn’t even stand.

Any movement at all sent waves of scalding water against their exposed skin, making them flinch and gasp in pain.

Still, he had to try. But the second his hand touched the rock—

    “Ahhh!”

A wretched scream tore from his throat as the scorching surface instantly burned his palm.

    Blisters formed within seconds.

    That was it.

They were trapped. Stuck in this boiling creek. Waiting for death.

“You guys are Xiao Qiao’s friends?” a new voice rang out.

    Everyone froze.

A figure emerged through the thick smoke, panting heavily. It was a man, standing on the rocky ledge above them, looking down with a deep frown.

They had no idea who he was. But he had heard every single word they just said.

And what’s worse, he could see exactly why they were stuck.

The rocks surrounding the creek had been baked blood-red by the fire. Touching them meant instant burns.

This was going to be tricky.
