Brother Hu panicked but quickly gripped the fishing rod with both hands, his face full of excitement.

“Haha! It’s a big one, boss. This is a big fish!”

Brother Hu yanked hard, but the fish below was incredibly strong.

The rod bent into a deep arc, the tension in the line growing so intense it looked like it might snap at any moment.

“En? It’s really a big fish!”

Wang Yun glanced at the rod’s curve and squinted at the shadow thrashing beneath the water. His god-level vision helped, but the dim lighting made it difficult to gauge the fish’s exact size.

Still, he could make a rough estimate—probably around fifteen catties.

    “Brother Hu, I’ll help you!”

Xiao Gang hurriedly set aside his own rod and grabbed Brother Hu’s fishing rod with both hands.

“Damn, this fish is strong! Pull harder!”

Brother Hu clenched his teeth and used all his strength.

But no matter how hard they pulled, the fish refused to budge. If anything, the rod swayed violently, jerking them back and forth as the fish fought against them.

“Boss! Get over here. This thing is insane, I think the rod’s gonna snap!”

After a minute of struggling, Xiao Gang’s face was red with exertion, and he had no choice but to call Wang Yun for help.

A fifteen-catty fish shouldn’t be this difficult to reel in—two adults should be able to pull it up with sheer force alone.

So why was this one putting up such a fight?

“You two grown men can’t handle a fish?” Wang Yun chuckled at their struggle and walked over.

Xiong Sheng, who had been silently watching from the side, gave Wang Yun a scrutinizing look, a smirk tugging at his lips.

“Boss, it’s not us, it’s this damn fish! It’s a monster,” Brother Hu grunted, his face flushed as he fought to keep hold of the rod.

“Alright, step aside. Let me see what’s got you two so worked up.”

As soon as Wang Yun took hold of the fishing rod, his expression changed.

He had seriously miscalculated. To be more precise, his eyes failed him.

When he gripped the rod, a powerful force surged through his arms—far beyond what he had anticipated.

This wasn’t a fifteen-catty fish. Not even close.

He had only used about thirty percent of his strength at first, but now he had to push to at least eighty percent just to hold on.

He gritted his teeth and pulled harder.

“Holy, this thing’s at least sixty catties!”

A deep shock spread across Wang Yun’s face.

The angle he had used earlier to estimate the fish’s size was misleading. Under the moonlight, he had only seen part of its shadow. Now that he was standing where Brother Hu had been, he could see the entire fish.

    It was massive.

Its mouth was wide, lined with whisker-like tendrils.

Dark, nearly black scales glistened under the dim light, and its eyes were mere slits, nearly invisible.

The strangest part was how it thrashed.

Water droplets should have been spraying everywhere, but they weren’t.

The fish’s body was absorbing the force of its struggle in a way that kept the water contained. And the size was nearly a meter long.

    Wang Yun’s eyes narrowed.

    This was a deep-sea fish, a Nian Swallow Fish1.

“What the hell? Brother Hu, what kind of bait did you use to catch a Nian Swallow Fish?” Wang Yun’s shock was evident, but he still couldn’t help but joke.

    “What?! A deep-sea fish?!”

    “That’s impossible!”

Brother Hu barely had time to react before Xiong Sheng interrupted.

“Mr. Wang, you must be mistaken. We’re in a freshwater area, tens of thousands of miles away from any deep-sea zones. There’s no way you caught a Nian Swallow Fish. And even if you did, the smallest ones are at least eighty centimeters long and incredibly strong in the water. Forget three of you, even five people wouldn’t be able to pull one up.”

Xiong Sheng hadn’t bothered helping earlier, watching with a smug expression as Brother Hu struggled.

Even when Wang Yun stepped in, he had stayed back, waiting for them to embarrass themselves.

And now, as soon as Wang Yun identified the fish, he immediately poured cold water on it.

    Wang Yun’s jaw tightened.

Just as he was about to respond, Xiao Gang beat him to it.

“How can you say it’s impossible? There was an earthquake two days ago! It’s totally possible that deep-sea fish got shaken into this area. And besides, Mr. Xiong, you were invited here to teach us, right? Well, now that we’ve caught a big one, instead of helping, you’re just standing there watching like it’s a joke. When we get back, I’m definitely telling the program team. Are you here as a teacher, or just here to gloat?”

Xiao Gang’s voice was sharp, his eyes blazing.

    Xiong Sheng’s confident smirk faltered.

He hurriedly stepped forward with an awkward smile, reaching for the rod.

“Now, now, no need to get worked up. I was just letting you experience it first before stepping in. Since the opportunity is here, let me demonstrate the proper technique for reeling in a big fish.”

    Footnotes

    1. The Nian Swallow Fish (年吞鱼) doesn’t seem to correspond to any known real-world species. It may be a fictional creation or a stylized reference. If it’s real, it’s certainly a rare one.
