Chapter 424: Whose Damn Car Is Parked at My Door?!
by tinytreeWang Yun took one look at the woman who’d suddenly appeared and immediately understood from her attire that she was most likely a neighbor.
“Xiaocui, where’d they go? The door’s wide open and no one’s home,” Mao Hongping said as she walked up.
It was 11:30 a.m., just around lunchtime. Normally, even those out working the fields would have come home by now.
The woman named Xiaocui turned her head to glance at the car parked in front of the house. Then she gave Wang Yun and Brother Hu a good once-over.
From the way they were dressed, it was obvious—they were from the city.
“Xiao Gang went out to bring lunch to his parents. And these two are…?”
Xiaocui asked curiously.
In a village like this, where life moved slowly, the women had little to do aside from watching the kids, cooking, and cleaning. So when outsiders showed up, it naturally drew everyone’s attention.
Mao Hongping, remembering Wang Yun’s earlier reminder, quickly waved her hand dismissively.
“Oh, just some friends of Xiao Gang’s came by to chat with him. Shouldn’t you be getting ready for lunch? Why’re you still outside holding the baby?” she said while walking away from the yard, gently nudging the woman along.
Xiaocui followed, a bit embarrassed to keep lingering in someone else’s courtyard.
She glanced down at the baby in her arms and gave a smile.
“I just heard some noise and came to check. So these are Xiao Gang’s friends? I knew it; he’s doing great these days. Even his friends are so impressive and handsome. Brother Liang and Sister Liang can rest easy now.”
Mao Hongping nodded along, feigning modesty.
“Exactly! I’ll just wait in the yard for Brother Liang a bit. You go eat, don’t starve the child.”
She gave Xiaocui a gentle push again.
Having said this much, Xiaocui couldn’t find another excuse to stay. She turned back for one last glance at Wang Yun, reluctant to look away.
“Alright then, I’ll go eat first.”
And with that, she carried her child back toward her house.
The moment Xiaocui left, Mao Hongping hurried back inside and gave Wang Yun a conspiratorial wink as if to say: See? I handled it perfectly.
Wang Yun shot her a grateful smile.
“Come, have a seat. Looks like our timing’s off; it may take a while for them to come back.”
Saying so, Mao Hongping fetched a few stools from the side, wiped them down with a thick wad of tissues, and handed them over.
“Thanks.”
Wang Yun took a seat. He’d napped a bit in the car earlier, but now that he was under the sun again, sleepiness began creeping back.
Brother Hu, having driven through the night without rest, was equally worn out. His blank expression made him seem a bit fierce when he wasn’t talking.
That alone made Mao Hongping nervous. She didn’t dare engage him in conversation. Instead, her attention remained fixed excitedly on Wang Yun.
“Our fields are a bit far out. A round trip plus lunch easily takes over an hour. Have you two eaten yet? Want me to have someone bring some food over?”
She pulled out her phone as she spoke, eager to help.
Wang Yun quickly waved his hand.
He had just peeked into the kitchen—there were bowls and chopsticks laid out, steam still rising from the pot, and the fire underneath wasn’t even out. Clearly, they hadn’t gone far. Most likely Xiao Gang had just stepped out briefly to deliver food and would be back soon—twenty minutes at most.
“No need, really. He should be back any minute.” Wang Yun smiled.
But Mao Hongping was already dialing, undeterred by his protest.
“You city folks don’t know how it is in the countryside. They don’t have cars, just e-bikes. An hour is me being generous; they might be out in the fields all afternoon. I’ll just have my daughter bring something. She bought a bunch of that spicy sour noodle stuff online, costs a fortune for a single box. It’ll be a good chance for you to try it—”
Beep beep!
Just as she was rambling on, a familiar honk echoed from outside.
“Oh! Xiao Gang’s back! You have guests too!”
Before anyone came into view, Xiaocui’s voice rang out again.
She hadn’t even gone inside—instead, she stood outside with a bowl in her hands, clearly not wanting to miss a second of the show.
“Guests? What guests? Unbelievable! I didn’t go looking for him, but he still had the nerve to show up here himself!”
A second later, Xiao Gang’s voice thundered out.
His first sentence was fine. The second exploded into a furious roar.
“Wait, no—no no no!” Xiaocui, seeing him completely fired up, panicked and sprang to her feet.
But Xiao Gang had already flung his e-bike aside with a loud thud, grabbed a nearby brick, and marched toward the courtyard with an aura of doom.
“Whose damn car is this?! Get it the hell outta here! This is my front gate, damn it!”
His voice boomed into the yard before he even stepped inside.
Wang Yun, upon hearing the first sentence, had actually been smiling. But when the second came out, he couldn’t help but laugh aloud.
Xiao Gang had mistaken them for Mao Yan and his crew.
“Move what? What’s with that temper in broad daylight?”
Brother Hu, upon hearing his brother’s voice, leapt up from his seat in an instant. All exhaustion vanished in an instant.
“Huh?”
Xiao Gang stepped into the yard and saw three people standing there.
One of them he recognized right away—it was the matchmaker lady, whom he’d seen almost every day.
But the other two…
“Boss?! “Brother Hu?!”
