    Chapter Index

Colin thought carefully about what Kaleba Baren had said.

“Well, could you tell me the exact terms?” he asked with some hesitation.

Baren wiped the water from the corner of his mouth.

“Do you live nearby? I’ll give you a ride home, and we can talk in the car.”

    Colin nodded.

The car was already parked outside the bar. So Baren brought him over. Once inside, Baren instructed the driver to go into the club and get some ice.

    “Yes, boss.”

Baren looked at Colin and rubbed his head, still a little foggy from drink.

“If you come work for me, your main job will just be helping keep order in the club. Most of the time, you won’t have much to do. You can just sit in the office, drink tea, and watch the monitors. Of course, if you like to have fun, you can hang around the main hall on the first floor too. There’s only one rule: no drinking while you’re working.”

Colin understood. After all, this was the kind of work he had always done.

At that moment, the driver returned with the ice.

Baren handed Colin a clean towel.

“Wrap the ice in this and put it on your face. It’ll help with the swelling.”

Colin took the towel from him and the ice from the driver, wrapped them together, and pressed them to his face.

The moment it touched his skin, he sucked in a sharp breath from the pain.

    “Hiss—”

The driver then looked at his boss in the rearview mirror.

    “Boss, where are we going?”

Baren looked at Colin, clearly asking where he lived so they could drop him off first.

Holding the towel, Colin said quietly, “I only got here a few days ago. I’ve been staying in a small inn lately.”

Baren nodded at once and told the driver,

    “Go straight home.”

Then he turned back to Colin.

“Since you don’t have a place to stay, you can live at my house for now. I’m the only one living there anyway. As for salary and treatment, don’t worry. I don’t mistreat my own people.”

After saying that, the alcohol seemed to catch up with him. Without even waiting for Colin’s answer, he leaned back against the seat and fell asleep.

Seeing that he had fallen asleep, Colin closed his eyes as well to rest. His injuries were still throbbing.

The truth was that Baren had been looking for a capable enforcer these past few days.

For several days in a row, a few local punks had been coming to his club every night to make trouble. They had already scared off a lot of his customers.

It was seriously hurting his business.

But those punks were slippery as eels, and they were all decent fighters too.

Every time Baren’s people rushed out to catch them, the troublemakers had already slipped away before anyone could grab them.

That night, Baren had been drinking with the owner of a well-known local security company.

He had wanted to hire a few tough security guards.

Those punks would come into the club, harass the customers, and start smashing things. The moment someone came to stop them, they would run.

If this kept up, the bar’s reputation would be ruined completely.

The number of customers had already dropped quite a bit. He had to solve this problem as quickly as possible and then find a way to get even.

Then, just as he stepped outside, he happened to run into Colin.

The sight had immediately caught his attention.

The worry weighing on his mind eased a little. Once he relaxed, and with all the alcohol he had drunk, he fell asleep right away.

The car finally stopped in front of a neat little Western-style house.

The driver looked at Colin through the rearview mirror and said carefully, “Boss, we’re home.”

Baren gave no response. He was still asleep.

Helpless, the driver turned to Colin.

“Sir, could I trouble you to help me carry the boss inside?”

    Colin nodded.

    “Alright.”

It was already past two in the morning. Colin was exhausted and aching all over.

The two of them had to struggle with all their strength before they finally managed to get Baren into his room.

Baren was not especially fat, but at about one meter seventy-five and roughly two hundred ten pounds, he was still heavy. And when someone was asleep and completely unaware, supporting them made them feel even heavier.

Colin himself was a big man at one meter eighty-five, but only weighed about one hundred fifty jin.

The driver was even thinner, about one meter seventy-eight and only one hundred twenty jin.

Afterward, the driver told the housekeeper that Baren was letting Colin stay the night.

Then he said goodbye to Colin and left.

The housekeeper first poured Colin a cup of hot water.

“Sir, please rest for a moment. Give me a little time, and I’ll prepare a room for you.”

Colin nodded. He felt too miserable to speak.

The housekeeper went upstairs and quickly prepared a guest room for him.

Colin took a shower, then finally lay down on the bed.

At that moment, he thought that finding someone powerful to rely on was not a bad thing after all. As long as he lasted until the end of the show, he would receive a large sum of money, and after that he would no longer have to worry about life.

But what he did not know was that the seemingly honest Boss Baren had hidden a huge trap for him in the deal.

The next morning, when Colin opened his eyes and checked the time, it was already half past nine.

His body still hurt a little, but he felt much better than he had the night before.

Colin got up and went downstairs.

    Baren was still not awake.

When the housekeeper saw the guest come down, she greeted him.

“Good morning, sir. Breakfast is ready. Please wait a moment. Mr. Baren won’t be awake until noon.”

So Colin could only eat by himself. After that, he sat in the living room watching television in boredom while waiting for Baren to get up.

At long last, half past twelve arrived, and Baren came downstairs in his pajamas.
